How Well Does My Beginner Amp Hold Up Today? – Peavey RAGE 158 Retrospective

In this video, I take a look back at the Peavey RAGE 158, which was the very first amp I ever got. I’ll go over the specs of the amp, discuss how it sounds and evaluate how well it holds up today.

If you’re looking for an amp to buy for your beginner guitarist, the Peavey RAGE 158 is definitely worth looking into. It’s very affordable, sounds great and is built to last. I think the Peavey RAGE 158 is a great amp for beginners, and I hope you’ll check out this video to see why!

  • Sorry dude, that's not a "co-input". That is a CD input. So you can plug in a CD player direct via a cable. Its literally an AUX input where you can play along to pre-recorded music from your CD player or MP3 player.

  • I have one scince 1998 and i still use in My music room. The Overdrive really rocks and the clean channel is very bright. Great amp

  • "Co input" haha, had to replay that. "CD input" acts also similar to a fx return where only the treble knob affects the tone. Usefull if you want to run pedals without the fizz factor

  • Great video Dillon. I bought this amp when I bought my first guitar 20 years ago but sadly I never learned to play it. I've decided I'm going to try and learn it now though. The amp sounds a bit distorted. Does that means it's broken or are there some settings I'm not getting right? I was considering buying a Marshall MG10 or similar instead.

  • I played this amp yesterday. I was so shocked by how good the tones were. I played it side by side with some tube amps and it was pretty damn good!

  • You're choking the amp dude. It amazes me how many content creators don't know how run a trans tube amp correctly.????

On the Rage 158 run on the clean channel only and dime it. Its all about your puck attack. She'll take any pedal you wanna throw at her and she'll break like glass ????

Now the Peavey Bandit is a little different and you need to tweek a couple of settings. You want to run the T dynamic at 12 O clock and the presence at 11 O clock and dime the volume again don't even worry about the leas channel just throw your favorite pedal on it and she'll break like glass????

  • You gotta play this thing like it's a vintage mashall. It's not for metal. Even though it does sound interesting

  • as a kid i got a peavy guitar with a rage 258. i walked in a shop that closed a few years later. there was one black and one sunburst. of course i got the sunburst. it’s only now in my 20’s i realize how lucky i got. i love the rose wood fretboard. i put 8s on it and intonated it. everyone that picks it up says the action is perfect. if i upgrade it’ll probably be a mexican fender. i’m never getting rid of it tho

  • I had a Peavey Pacer back in 1982. That was when I first learned about overdrive. That was a really nice amp.

  • I just got one for $50 to stick in the livingroom for when my 100w Mesa SOB is a bit to much monster.

  • This was my first amp as a beginner i recently tried it again after not having used it for like 10 years, it sounds sick with a boost. used boss sd-1

  • I had exactly the same amp, gave it to a friend for free when I moved to head/cab.. I'm still missing it sometimes. Cheers.

  • I got the red stripe 258 efx. I got a 12 inch eminence legend speaker instead of the 8 inch speaker.
I know this thing would sound twice as good with a 12 inch speaker

  • I recently picked one up at a flea market. 20 bucks, hooked it to the pedalboard, and it sounded very nice!

  • I had the one from the mid 90’s teal coloured controls. I thought it sounded way better than this model.

  • The modern/vintage switch is really just a Bright switch, where 'Vintage' is the brighter of the two. That came out more clearly on the neck pickup, when you played clean.

  • 0:22 'co input' ? What? Its a cd player input for playing along with. It even says CD input next to the jack.

  • Got one of those and I love it. Perfect for a small spaces, one just gotta know how to set it up properly. BTW, It's an open back little combo, so it is open, but what the warning label states is not to open the chasis, inside some caps might retain charge for a time, those are the ones that can give you a shck, not the speaker leads…

  • I have a Rage 258 – basically the same thing with a couple more watts – and I really like the sound. I think Peavey really nailed it with the transtube technology.

  • I just picked one of these Rage 158 Redlines up at a yard sale for $5. Thing is I had also picked up a Peavey Audition 30 in the same manner for not much more a month ago. They were both a little dusty like they were sitting in the back of a closet for years but in great shape otherwise. Assuming they both work fine, which one should I keep? I'm a beginner so I'm thinking the Rage 158 is the way to go.

  • I love those things, I got all three versions of the 158. Nothing a 2×12 cab won't cure. Great little amp for recording too.

  • This amp and a digitech rp300 were my first setup as a kid. Did everything i needed for the longest time. Still have both and they still work. Pretty cool to see this amp still getting attention after like 20yrs or something lol. Now i have to dig it out and go down memory lane.

  • I have the Peavey Blazer 158. It has the reverb tank, where the rage didn't. I bought it new somewhere around 97 or 98. I just pulled it out of storage several weeks ago and had to take it apart and clean it. And reset the tank. It still works fine.

  • Do you know what year it was made? New when you bought it?

I picked up exact type today for $34

Multiple searches finds different fronts but no serial # or dates and no model except the writing on the front same as yours.

  • The CD input is for plugging your CD player to, so you can play with a backing track. I had one of those! I didn't remember the vintage / modern switch at all. I had also forgot the tones. I don't have much nostalgia for this one, though.
