Rig Rundown – Dave Cobb

Dave Cobb had a big year in 2015, having won Grammy awards for producing Chris Stapleton’s Traveller and Jason Isbell’s Something More Than Free. Cobb has moved his studio to the legendary RCA Studio A, which was opened by Chet Atkins in 1965, and has since produced projects for Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown, and a ton of other top-billing acts. Between sessions, Cobb took PG on a gear tour of his studio where we were treated to a bevy of vintage beauties.
Cobb keeps a ton of vintage gear handy for anybody recording in his studio. His arsenal of guitars includes this 1952 goldtop Les Paul. At some point it was converted to a ’57 with a neck reset, stop tailpiece, and vintage PAF pickups.
Originally, Cobb thought the red finish on this 1966 Fender Esquire was the work of an inexperienced DIY-er, but turns out that what’s left of the Fiesta Red was the original finish.

You guys need to do a chris stapleton rig rundown and another dave cobb.
That red snapper is legendary there’s so many pedals based off of that thing
And now Jason Isbell owns that ‘59 red Gretsch because he hit the number of sales of Southeastern that Cobb said it would take to get him to sell the guitar!
Tele pickup recommendation. Seymour Duncan Antiquity 60's tele. I have it in mine and it sounds great.
Please can you a 2024 update!!!
12:08 Wow John, I dont know if that statement counts as foreshadowing, but it does in 2023. How much is that guitar worth now. ????❤????
I was able to go to a session the other day at RCA studio A. Was so cool to stand in there!!’
this dude is SPOT ON.
– I share that love of a modded / weird, or wonky but still beautiful old guitar
I've got to get my arse to nashville one day. It's the one place I want to go when I go on a holiday to the usa
Absolute lord ????
DAVE IM DROPPING BY TOMORROW TO {BORROW} THE 57 LP. THE ESQUIRE, THAT 335, AND A FEW OF THOSE AMPS, I PROMISE ILL BRING 'EM BACK! YOU CAN TRUST ME! ????????????????????????
"you know"
Respectfully, a stock Esquire always goes through the volume pot, not straight to the jack. Position 1=no tone control, pos 2=tone pot, pos 3 preset=capacitor/resistor circuit.
What does he say there about the trick with the Marshall amp and then using the tone and volume knobs? Sounds like he says “dom the Marshall?” Does he mean crank the volume?
Dave looks like he’s 27. What the hell is this guy eating.
What intro song is that?
So wait, what is the acoustic guitar?
“I don’t want to play a guitar that feels like a suit”………..Yes I really get that
I know nothing about this guy….What a great dude. This may have been the best RR I've seen.
That was a great a story about him sending buddy on the guitar hunt then buddy says I don’t wanna sell it. Those would of be fighting words lol.
All these cats here from Stapleton and Simpson and I’m over here from Wheeler Walker Jr.
cool dude, great producer, and great taste in gear. caroline pedals rock.
This is Your Holy Grail!!!
This is a really great guitar geek video. The only thing that was killing me was how obsessed Mr. Cobb seemed to be about that elongated sideburn looking hair in front of his right ear.
Jesus Loves You
I'm surprised he even has any gear left, with all the stuff he's sold to Jason Isbell ???? Legends, both of them!
Brad Paisley is a great guitar player. Keith Urban is a great guitar player. Brent Mason is a great guitar player. John Mayer is a great guitar player. Vince Gill is a great guitar player. Jason Isbell ?
Casually picking pedals up from between the Grammys, not even mentioning them. That's some chill.
That was amazing ????????
Love the JD pickups and what a great player i have both a JD Strat and tele heaven.
Awesome run down!
Great interview
I am pretty sure the front position on the esquire runs through a "bass" cap that warms up the tone. mine sounds a lot different in the front position than in the middle position with the the knob rolled back. I agree though about the versatility of those guitars. I love them.
Dave really looks like the Christian Bale of music
I need Chris Stapleton to know when my birthday is ????
It's definitely never cheaper to be a crackhead!
Well I better brace for all the Fender ads I'll be getting in my browser after they see me in these parts of Youtube
