  • New sub. Just set up my Tascam PortaOne 4-track and have learned so much from this channel. No ego attitude or annoying BS. Just humble delivery of useful info. Thanks ❤

  • I just realised that I’ve had my SM57 for like, 20 years now and I still use it every week as my vocal mic at church.

  • I feel like the sm57 is great but kind of a pain because it needs like 60db gain and cheap interfaces often don't have that

  • Can confirm, I used the SM57 for studio work in the 70s. Mostly for kick drum, but it was great for other things too. It hasn’t changed a bit. Must be doing something right.

  • I remember that watching your review solidified my choice of XM8500. 6 months later, I still use it to be perfectly honest – cannot see any reason for change. We live in lovely times when 20$ give you a quality this good.

  • Just got my first SM57. Was going to get a second one to record my Jazz Chorus in stereo but started considering a different mic. Thinking of getting the Audio-Technica AT4040 or the Shure SM27. Which mic would you recommend from the aforementioned 2

  • I have been preaching about the 8500 since 2018! I 3D printed housing for them that look like SM7B’s! It’s the perfect mic for learning how to engineer and once you get a groove you can litterally use it anywhere! I have used this mic on numerous short film sets, podcasts, live shows, etc and gotten beautiful sound

  • I'm personally a big fan of the SM58 and the PG57 from Shure. The SM58 is the industry standard for a reason, and the PG57 has lasted well over a decade for 90 bucks.

  • I had grand old time cobbling together a pair of large diaphragm condensers to be housed in a couple of those $20 Chinese mics from Amazon. Aside from some hum problems in one of them due to my hamfisted soldering of a ground, they sound really really good. I've recorded ambient sounds for loops, and several recitals for a piano teacher friend, with excellent results.

  • Chris Squire the bass player from YES, who sang incredible harmonies on everyone of their tracks until he passed away in 2015. He used a 57 from day one till the last day. His Bass playing and vocals were LETHAL. Elite musician. Do yourself a favor if you're a singer and listen to some Yes material. Jon Anderson is arguably the best singer ever in Rock music. And still has his voice today. My bass player just saw him a couple weeks ago and he was blown away. There's a live show with Jon Anderson singing with a huge band called Todmobile. They perform a Yes song Anderson wrote in his 20's called Awaken. The level of songwriting is thru the roof. I put it on Facebook and got hundreds of comments from people that were blown away from beginning to the end. And the production quality is one of the best live sounds I've heard. 2 drummers , 33 back up singers, 1 guitar players and a solid ass Bass player along with a keyboardist lighting it up on his NORD Boards, with a full orchestra. You'll dig it . Jon is using a SM58 same price as the SM57. Wait till you hear the sound he gets out of it. Actually Everyone is using Shure SM 58's as well , they're 99$ mics and listen to the Quality. The reason he recommended the SM57 in this mic video is because it does vocals and instruments. SM58 is a vocal mic. https://youtu.be/d_Va3e_52TE?si=jjQFqsEtJZdwusf0

  • A little tip for anyone that doesn't know. Your stuffy nose reminded me . When tracking vocals ,even when you're not stuffy. Try a breath right strip. You'll be blown away how much easier it is to breathe ,and it actually improves the tone of your voice. It removes the nasal sound we all inherently have in our timbre, even if it's not obvious in your voice, it's still there. If it didn't play a part you could just plug up your nostrils and sing and you would sound exactly the same.

  • To this day, there isn't a single song I haven't recorded not using an SM 57 or 58. The result have been wanting, but that's because I don't know how to mix or master. The microphones have never been the issue.

  • I'm really coming to appreciate your opinions on everything from gear to recording to whatever. A lot of people on YT just seem to blow smoke and get nowhere. You get to the point. Thank you so much for that. ✌️

  • I bought an SM57 in 1987 to sing background vocals in the cover band I was in. I still have it and used it 5 days ago to record myself playing an acoustic guitar. Still sounds great.

  • Extra credit: Rode Video Mic Go II
USB C, imperceptible noise floor, great rejection, and it works from some distance.

Replaced a whole signal chain on my desk for doing my basic video voice work.

    $100
