Super Simple Guitar Amp Tone Setting Lesson that will change how you practice!
In this lesson, I cover how to adjust your guitar’s volume and tone, along with the amp’s volume and tone. I teach this setting to all my students—it’s a crucial lesson if you want to enhance your playing! This setup will help you practice with less pressure and softer picking, allowing you to control your dynamics. Why is this important? Because your touch is part of your tone.
Pick softly, all down stroke, with the proper setting. Try this out and let me know how it goes!

My dad's old Lp
I thought about using ladder softer Dynamics, it never really soaked in until I heard you play it on this video, thank you, Tomo!
Dan Auerbach turned me onto one of these when he mentioned many guitar and bass parts for Brothers was just a Musicmaster Bass amp.
This video helped a lot. I think being able to set up you amp nevermind pedals is anywhere from %25-%50 of getting a decent sound out of your guitar, the other bit being your playing. I remember when buying a new guitar when I was first starting to play, I would always drag my guitar teacher with me because not only did he have a good ear, but he could actually play versus my horrendous picking and plucking, which would make any great guitar sound awful. I had to learn to adjust my amps myself, and that is something I am still learning, as each amp is different, and can behave differently with different guitars along with pedals/effects. A lot of the time less is more, and just because you can't hear or detect a change in the amp doesn't mean their isn't one, so like you said, as soon as you no longer hear a change in tone or volume with the knob being turned, stop right there. Helps a lot!!
Get yourself any one of the Blackface or Silverface Fenders, even one with a master volume but NOT with the “hum balance” control at the rear or a printed circuit board. My favourite is my Bassman 100 that I put a F.R.E.D. rectifier circuit in.
"Great players are great teachers for themselves"
Holy boy 7 minutes in and still not a single information.
I’ve been playing for 3 decades and this was exactly what I needed! Thank you Tomo, you are indeed a first class teacher!!
‘Many beers on the floor..” That was funny.
man..did u smoke weed before this vid? if u don't u should and either way upside downside to the opposite
anything by fender is sweet!!i hate marshalls!!
Wonderful lesson. I’ve been playing for decades and never learned this. I will incorporate this into my regular practice now
Gonna look for that amp too!! ????????????????????
Hello from Boston ☘️love your teaching Tomo ????
Love my little amp!!! The power switch is the volume knob. Like an old radio.
Good lessons, thank you to share with us.
❤
I have been using improper settings for almost 15 years. Thank you so much for this simple but immensely important lesson, Fujita-san! ????????
Ichi ban !!
The trouble I have is playing softly when I’m with my band. I can do it alone, but I find the I pick really hard when I’m with other musicians.
I recently realized that I need to stop practicing with my guitar unplugged. I suggest turning volume up instead, so you must focus on clean notes or be punished.
My playing has gotten much, much better
Great lesson
Whats the amp model !!!!????
Thank you very much Mr. Fujita!????????????
I got to get me one of those music masturbates amps can you lower the volume up on those amps to????????
Boring
I know that I don't know, Because I used to Love big No master Volume amps. But that era is gone.
Lately I have been in the Marshall Plexi-50 in Line6. And what seems very odd is that I have the master and channel volume at 80-90% and the Pre-Amptone section on "2" and the volume pedal at 20% as the minimum instead of zero. THEN I trnu the guitar all the way down and ease into a smooth tone. Literally that formula is a whole vibe. and if I roll either the guitar OR the volume pedal up it gets thick without all of the clipping that I would get if the front end was 75% and the output volume was at "2"
Great lesson
Hey Tomo I have a question:
Do you recommend louder amp + guitar at 7 all the time, even during performance? Or just during practice for hearing dynamics?
Do you find the guitar has less dynamics or lose some treble when volume is down?
Thanks!
Respectfully, Leo sold Fender in 1965, and he remained for a few years as a consultant. The Musicmaster Bass amp was designed and introduced after Leo no longer was involved in product development.
Kia Ora Tomo, just discovered your channel and I love ya Vibe. I'm of similar Vintage (1970) and I am useless at theory but passable as a guitar player ???????? hahaha just perusing and watching your stuff had me remembering times and gigs of my era Thank You. This Man from Aotearoa (NZ) truly appreciates you and your followers ❤
Hallo Mr Tomo. I want to ask something.. what are the most important things to learn on the guitar to become a good guitar player? I hope you reply
Thank you for the video master. I too like some others have recently realized the importance of the dynamics from how hard/soft I pick and how much volume control i can have just by dialing back that volume knob on my guitar. The exercise here is priceless, I'm going to make it a daily routine for different levels. I think it's important to record my own exercise and listen back to them.
LEGEND
I sometimes watch this channel. I can‘t remember seeing this amazing player using a digital guitar amp or a modeler … a current everyday discussion…
