HX Stomp Bass Rig Setup Q&As – Replace Bass Amp / Presets: Amp & Cab Sims / FRFR Speakers / DI Box

Is the Line 6 HX Stomp a true all-in-one bass rig replacement?
In this video, I respond to a viewer’s great questions about using the HX Stomp as a complete amp and cab replacement for bass — from running direct to front of house, to using FRFR speakers and monitoring live without a traditional backline. I break down the pros, the compromises, and share my own experiences with different setups. Whether you’re gigging amp-less, exploring FRFR options, or just curious about how far the HX Stomp can go for bass, this one’s for you. Jump into the comments to share your take!
A quick shout out to Theo from Greece for reaching out! Here’s his original questions:
QUESTION No.1
As all topics in life, there’s a huge debate on the web if this thing can completely replace 100% a traditional bass amp rig. I’m talking exclusively about bass amps and cabs simulation. I am not talking about the effects which are great and useful. Many praise one opinion against the other and many others the exact opposite.
Right now I play only through Headphones or directly to my audio interface. Of course I cannot rely on these 2 for serious live applications. Before making any further investment (to a bass head and a real cabinet) I want to take some knowledge and make wise decisions without breaking the bank or regret.
The one way (as I think about it) is straight to FOH from the Balanced Out of the HX Stomp. And from there to stage monitors or IEM’s in order to hear myself and the band. No amp in between. Everything from the HX Stomp.
But do you get the feel? The character? The whoomph? Is it truly convincing? Is it any close to the real thing?
The other way is with a real amp and cabinet in between (4 cable method inside the effects loop of the Stomp). The HX Stomp only for pre-gain effects (octaver, compressor, distortion, fuzz etc.) and time based-modulation after the real preamp.
Here I will break the bank for sure but it sounds more “safe” to me.
I’ve always been a “real amp” guy and the transition to this new world now seems very strange.
What is your opinion and your experience?
QUESTION No.2
If I choose the 1st pre-mentioned way (everything from the HX Stomp), I’m wondering if an active-powered PA speaker can deliver properly what a bass sound requires. Ok… amp modelers require FRFR speakers as PA speakers, cannot go down to 35Hz without a subwoofer.
So again you are breaking the bank in a way and you end up with huge and heavy equipment again.
While the purpose is the opposite. To get rid of weight and effort. Or am I thinking it wrong?
QUESTION No.3
The HX Stomp has unbalanced and Balanced Output depending on how you set up these Outputs (Instrument or Line level). That means with a TRS cable I can send the WET signal directly to FOH? Does it really send a healthy signal?
No necessity for DI Box with XLR (mic level)? And how do you get GROUND/LIFT without a DI Box if hum occurs?

Good content and awesome t shirt ????
It's insane how much you know ????
I don't think I'd go ampless. The sound maybe good in my in ear monitors, but the "feel" and low end vibration behind me would be lost. I use my Helix LT mainly for effect and a Ashdown Rootmaster 500 EVOII with a Ashdown 4 x10 cab that's almost 25yrs old and still going strong.
Thanks for this – very informative as a new user.
Switching to an amp less setup has made set up times for gigs much faster and easier! I love my stomp! It is definitely fun and motivating to play with a cab behind you, but in my experience it has made everything much easier to just send a DI signal to FOH.
