fixing poor control over the instrument is not the purpose of a compressor and won't allow for it to be used musically.
Lumpy? They call that dynamics.
Or. Use a fuzz .lol.
Oh, so this is why music the last two decades has been SO BORING
So, what we do, is keep on playing the bass, until WE gain control of our dynamic instead of the compressor… (and then we add a bit of compression):D
compressors kill skill. you need to know what certain volumes feel like under your fingers so you can properly use dynamics. compressors are all fine and dandy for genres where bass is less forward and more simple. however if you want to get good at jazz, improvisation, basically any of the actual fun stuff, you have to have fine control of your fingers. that only comes with a setup of just a single cord, bass, and amp. of course that also goes along with diligent, consistent practice.
Or… you could try playing with even velocity so the compressor isn't doing all the work.
A much better practice would be to manually clip every note and attenuate each note to the same level before compression. This will give a more consistent tone without adding unwanted harmonics after compression. I have friends in Nashville who are hired to do only this process on massive artist records. I started implementing this in my production, and it's worth the time.
I've never used a compressor !
Probably never will!????
hey you played bass how I play bass
I start by knowing what intensity to play when and making it gel with the drums.
But I do like compression…
Only: do it in multiple stages.
My amp has a built-in compressor on the input and is tube driven (which is another compressor!), and I use an optical compression pedal in the FX loop.
All set quite moderately, but all together the sound is still alive (not all squashed out) and even enough to get where I need to be, even when the adrenaline of a live gig kicks in ????????
Good bass players don't need a compressor
I want dynamics. Compression sounds disappointing. I don't like it.
So much for dynamics…
That cap holding on for dear life, this dude has a Noggin! ????
it’s important to use dynamics properly a compressor has pros and cons and it’s not as simple as using compression because you need to be able to dial that right, anyone who is gigging know your audio person is compressing you
Opinions are like farts we all have them and they usually stink.

Play it intentionally even. Problem solved
No one likes lumps. Wether in your bass line or your oatmeal, it's just not pleasant….
So stupid. Stop applying compression everywhere. You're just killing the music
So put a compressor to kill the vibe and phrasing of a line? Dude makes no sense
Compression > edge of drive > play softly, relish every note and articulation in relation to what else is going on. Always pocket, groove, pocket and play from the heart ????
I hate this
Aye, back in the ‘70’s I would just drive that speaker cabinet to get natural compression AND feel the bass. Nowadays I use my Keeley Compressor Pro into the DI box and house system w/IEMs. Just a little goes a long way, because an over compressed bass will have an annoying clicking sound instead of having a rich tone, especially with in-ear-monitors. Always a good idea to check your sound on the floor (live show) or on reference monitors (studio), and make sure you are happy with the sound.
There's a saying among mechanics: I've seen your welds, you're getting a grinder for X-mas.
"I've heard your playing, your getting a comp for X-mas"
I played an entire career as a professional bassist, eschewing all compression (and even effects) in a quest for ultimate dynamic control and pure tone, only to discover them more as "effects" later in life as a recordist, producer and engineer. My opinion now is; if you must use a comp, an optical compressor is always the best choice if you want transparency.
Compressor all the way.
But if song needed lighter attack that's all different thing ❤❤❤❤❤
Before thinking about compressor or volume automations, one must think about on what strings to play. Every strings has a different mass and a different volume. If you need consistency in tone and loudness is better to play on the E and A strings as much as possible instead of moving too much around the fretboard.
An easier solution(s). Correct strings for tuning, correct action, correct techniques. (25 years a bassist and engineer)
You should've shown an example of that bass line compressed.????????
Love my Effectoede LA-1A tube limiter/compressor. Favorite piece of gear; even more important over my Noble. It changed everything. I MUST know what bass this guy is playing? I’ve the response!!!!
Use the james jamerson one finger style no compression needed
you say lumpy i say dynamics
As a mixing engineer, and also a (mid) bass player:
A compressor is nice to even things out, but it can't to miracles. If you make it work too hard, it will probably sound terrible.
Also compressors are good for shaping the dynamics of the instrument (how much attack and sustain you need, etc), but it won't work as consistently if the recording is all over the place.
It starts with good playing and practice. Use a compressor after that. Especially for non-slap bass.
