How to Play A Shuffle on the Bass

Ever been at a jam where nobody knows what to play? It usually ends the same way: shuffle time.

In this week’s “Essence of Groove” video, I’ll show you several different ways to play this feel — from simple patterns to rock and even swing. Once you’ve got these under your fingers, you’ll be much better prepared the next time someone says, “Let’s play a blues.”

  • Another great song for a shuffle groove is Heart Ache Tonight by the Eagles.

Great song for beginner and intermediate players like myself.

  • So, I’m making lunch and this shuffle show pops up on my feed.
I thought that would be a great listen.
After a minute, I have to get my bass and start playing along.
    Burned lunch.
    More time to play
I’ll make more chow in a minute.
    Cheers Amigo!

  • Get a metronome or drum pattern and hammer in the swing feel form as slow as you can go to as fast as you go for a long time. I find it especially hard when doing quick tempo and crossing strings line a pattern for Torn Down.

  • Just found your channel. I enjoyed it very much. I'll have to go back and watch the Texas blues shuffle. I liked all of them but that one is a lot like what I play now. Thank you for the videos. New subscriber.

  • Beautiful bass, takes me back a few decades when Modulus was all the rage. Should have grabbed a neck then.

  • With me, it depends on the speed of the music. Naturally, I play 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 because it feels more comfortable to me. I don't always agree with playing technique videos because they come across as rather rigid and structured. We are all different and play in a way that makes us feel comfortable a individuals. Classical style training is very limiting in its ideas.

  • Glenn Miller – In The Mood is so similar to Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys. It's a really fun bass line to play.

  • It's simple, but even experienced players can learn a lot from this. I very much welcome it, thank you.

  • What is wrong with just QUARTER NOTES!? Forget all the damn grace notes and dotted crap. Let the drummers and guitar players do that. 1 – 3 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 3 will always feel better than anything else. I played bass on a Dion record because that's exactly what he wanted to hear that his other bass player wasn't doing.

  • I'm about to retire and my son, a self-taught guitarist, thinks I should pick up a bass and learn how to play it. If I could just learn how do these shuffles, I'd be happy. Of course, if I could get even close to how Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath plays, you'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Good Night! And thanks for The video!
    Congratulations!????????????From Argentina!

  • I love the ZZ Top "shuffle in C" story. Ai Ai-n't picking it up though: "To "shuffle in C" is likely a reference to playing a musical style, not a programming task, as the search results primarily show tutorials and backing tracks for a blues shuffle rhythm on guitar in the key of C. If you are a programmer, "shuffle" in C++ can refer to the std::shuffle algorithm in the <algorithm> library, which randomly permutes elements in a range, but there is no direct equivalent in C itself." Lord…….Maybe C++ is D…….

  • Bobbing the head looks so corney – I always lose respect when I see someone doing that. It's supposed to be about the BASS, not Chicken Little. What's wrong with throwing the neck out and back for emphasis? That helps you PROJECT out into the audience and give every ounce of energy away. Bobbing your head isn't the most tiring job in the world, but PROJECTING for four hours is. Do it right.

  • My advice for bass players is to take drum lessons. I'm primarily a guitar player now, but I grew up playing bass (in a family of musicians). I ended up going to college for music and played bass in the jazz band. But I also had a love for drums (and guitar, and I played trumpet throughout college…) and so I took drum lessons all through college. To me, that was the most useful and impactful knowledge that I applied to bass. It really helps you understand timing on another level. Past band mates use to jokingly call me "the counter" (because, yes – I count), but I was always were I was supposed to be when I was supposed to be there ????

  • Hi, New Bassist here. I appreciate your video, and look forward to seeing more. I recently acquired a lovely pearl white Ibanez Sound Gear Bass. I have practiced on it till my fingers were raw. I still need to build up some calluses. Keeping time is easy for me. But how do you avoid fingertip pain? Especially while learning. Thanks
