This bass line NEVER quits. Bass Teacher REACTS to QOTSA – “The Evil Has Landed”

➡️ Released in 2017 on the band’s “Villains” album, “The Evil Has Landed” surprised me by sounding more like an unearthed Zeppelin jam than a polished modern rock song. What makes it so compelling is bassist Michael Shuman’s role: weaving fills, fuzz, and swagger into nearly every section without ever losing the pocket. I mean… bass melodies for DAYS on this one. In this video, I dive into the shifting harmonic landscape between natural minor and Dorian, the song’s clever use of dynamics and carefully-placed pauses, and what this track can teach bass players about phrasing, tone, note lengths, and restraint.

  • Mainy people "miss neck" but honestly Mr Mikey Shoes is such a fucking killer bass writer

  • Definitely more QOTSA and you need to check out Viagra Boys and Wet Leg! Oh and Them Crooked Vultures

  • People who just listen and rock out to music:
Best drummer – Dave Grohl. Best bassist – Nick Oliveri. Best album – SftD (with a little bit of Rated-R)

    People who play instruments:
Best drummer – Jon Theodore. Best bassist – MIKEY SHOES. Best album – …Like Clockwork, Villains.

  • I got to see this song live in concert only a few weeks before the album came out, was so groovy and when the "HERE… WE… COME… " bit kicked in the whole crowd was going crazy hah

Never been disappointed at a QOTSA show in the half a dozen odd times I've seen them live!

  • Such a shame that this album had Mark Ronson’s involvement. Desperately need a remaster.

  • More QOTSA please. Best live show I ever went to and astonishing album catalogue. Mexicola and Better living through Chemistry should be on here as well.

  • Honestly, one of the best bands out there. You really can't go wrong with anything in their discography.

  • Queens are the reason I wanted to play bass. Every song has something interesting going on! Whilst they’ve had several bass players, they’ve all been incredible musicians, you’re not going to find a boring bass line.

I sat by the ocean or I appear missing would be good to see your take on! ????

  • The best working rock band out there! Check out the bass on I appear missing… the outro is so moving

  • Saw them play that song live last year and as a bass player (who still struggles playing this song) seeing Michael crush this bass line WHILE signing high harmony was mind-blowing. One of the high point of the show for sure

  • For more bassy riff of Mikey Schu, you need to hear I Appear Missing or My Head Like A Hunted House by the QOSTA.

  • Qotsa are incredible, hope to see a lot more of them featured! Mikey is incredible and has many more amazing bass lines. Their first bassist Nick Oliveri also had some wicked bass lines too.

  • This whole album gave me Zeppelin vibes. I'd been listening to QOTSA for probably 10 years when it came out and had never connected those dots. I think his time with John Paul Jones in Them Crooked Vultures sort of transformed the QOTSA sound. That sole TCV album is wonderful. JPJ and Dave Grohl on drums with Josh Homme again. It had to be awesome.

  • I Appear Missing by QOTSA would be another excellent song for bass.
Tons of interplay between the bass and drums, super rhythmic bass parts.

  • Guys at the end he said he knows Scott Reeder personally but never listened to Kyuss!!! We should have him listen to Space Cadet! It’s an amazing Kyuss song that Scott wrote, and the bass is pretty much the lead on it

  • I'm a huge QOTSA fan, huge fan of your channel … love having them together! You should do some Them Crooked Vultures – you'll get that mix of Led Zeppelin and QOTSA, because it's literally Josh Homme and JPJ. If you're down for a longer song, i'd recommend 'Warsaw or the first breath you take after you give up" aka "the first song". Also … Mikey Shoes is amazing!

  • Loved this, queens songs always have amazing parts for all instruments. Can't wait for more

  • Mikey Shoes is a monster bassist. He's also doing the higher harmonies live (on this song too), no easy feat considering how often he's gliding through their songs with groovy inversions and leads throughout.
