Rig Rundown – Nada Surf

Premier Guitar’s Perry Bean yacks with Nada Surf founder Matthew Caws and Doug Gillard—also of Guided by Voices—before their Nashville show at the Mercy Lounge.
Caws’ main axe is this Edwards “lawsuit” Les Paul that was made in Japan. The word is that Edwards, a subsidiary of ESP, made this incredibly light guitar so close in construction and aesthetics to a Gibson Les Paul that it can’t legally be sold in the U.S. The Edwards features replicas of Gibson Burstbucker pickups and Caws keeps it strung with a set of beefy D’Addario .012 gauge strings.
Gillard lets the song dictate which of his classic Gibsons he plays. Currently, Gillard tours with three Kalamazoo-era guitars and one of his favorites is this 1973 Les Paul Standard with 490R/490T humbuckers that he’s owned since he was 18.

Love Matthew but i guarantee he got rid of the Fulltone.
Does anyone know why they never play anything form High Low ?
Saw them live when I was in fifth grade, my first ever concert 🙂
Why do they never ask about the bass rigs???
Miss you, Matthew! That Great Nada Surf Sound!
I miss President Trump
It’s funny to me how people are always surprised that Doug Gillard uses a Dual Rec. It’s really sad that most people seem to think that Recs are only for high gain crap. Recs have the most amazing clean to mild breakup tone, just like all Mesa’s. It’s even more sparkly and “chimey” than a Fender, pretty hi-fi sounding. Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard are masters at getting really Fendery tones with Gibson guitars, and part of that is using high headroom, super clean amps. The Dual Rec clean channel is just that, and it sucks that they aren’t thought of more in that light. Listen to the GBV album Isolation Drills. Doug’s 70’s black beauty through his Dual Rec shines on that album so much.
The best.
I have an absolute man crush on Matthew Caws. Such an immensely talented songwriter and just a cool guy.
Matthew and Doug. Nada Surf and GBV. So much love!
Matthew is such a cool guy. I love that Nada Surf is still going so strong after all this time.
he played strange chords : ) he is great
he has very high end guitar gear
Man I love cranking amps amd rolling the volume on the guitar back. Sounds great
Always good to see a les paul knock off in a rundown
12 gauge!! I use 7s (admittedly that is light but if it's good enough for BB King and ZZTop it good enough for me. Anyway I only recently dicovered this band and I love 'em.
I like my Bacchus BLP classic. Also resonant as hell. True story – Saw Matt Caws on the subway in NYC once, looked like he was nervous on his way to a date. I didn't want to say anything but threw on Hyperspace the old ipod back then.. cool moment to self. But yeah my Bacchus needed real hand wound pickups. Put Sigil hand wound PAF. CTS 500k pots, PIO caps vintage… Dr. Z amp with built in attenuation though. I have a hot plate sitting in a box I found it really squashes my tone.
so jealous perry! love these guys.
Its so nice to see that some of my dearest heroes are actually really nice guys <3
Daniel lorca is such a huge bassist, it's criminal not to check his rig, i''ve been so curious about his old p bass… damn.
It's funny that he credits AC/DC tone for being clear and then says he'd rather use an attenuator than the guitar volume because it "loses" something-yet Angus has his volume rolled back for that tone.

It'd be great if you do a Ryan Bingham's Rig Rundown. That guy has just an amazing gear!!!
Don't really know their music but they seem like really cool people. Gotta check them out
what a smart guy!
I live in Tokyo. Edwards guitars usually have Seymour Duncans in them. Quite often it's the SH-4 JB in the bridge and SH-2n Jazz in the neck but that differs depending on the guitar. Anyway, there's a high chance that the Les Paul in this Rig Rundown also has Duncans in it.
Good to see this! Their latest album is really good.
