3 Advanced Galloping Riffs – Metal Rhythm Guitar Lesson
It’s time to expand on one of the coolest and challenging metal rhythm guitar methods – galloping!
I’m going to give you 3 advanced galloping riffs to learn. In case you get lost, here are the timestamps for each lesson and the tabs (with the slow version):
01:22 – Advanced Galloping Riff 1
03:16 – RIff 1 Tabs
04:50 – Advanced Galloping Riff 2
06:12 – RIff 2 Tabs
08:56 – Advanced Galloping Riff 3
10:24 – RIff 3 Tabs
11:20 – Motivational Chat and Other Cool Stuff
This is one of my personal favorite metal guitar methods. It just has that edgy vibe to it and it can be used in pretty much every subgenre of metal (we have so many these days!).
**Important: Make sure that you don’t just learn these riffs. I want you to expand on them by adding your own notes and your own style. That’s how you become a better guitarist. So follow the concepts and see what you can come up with!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

You play in Dminor or FMajor as I see.
Please explain that Gallop is 3/4 instead of 4/4 in a 4 bit pattern.
If you play gallop like Iron Maiden, they have 'missed' different notes from gallop of Judas Priest.
Thanks for all the knowledge.
This cahnnel has always definitely been helpful for so many times.???? It deserves much more subs! ????????????
What a great teacher. Very relaxed and personable. Simple explanations. Love it.
what thickness are your picks?
Watching from Bangladesh I love your lesson with tabs. Thanks a lot. I wanna learn to play metal please help me and give me tabs I'm beginner aquistic guitar
Even by metal standards, you're a really nice guy
Jason, have you ever had a bad hair day (hehehe) and wound up making tick-tock shorts…. ???????????? Cos that'd be like NOT metal, actually it'd be bout as plastic as say, oh I don't know… Just don't man…
Great job man. All my support
I really like your presentation style – very approachable and great info.
some of my favorite gallops are 'Criminally insane' and 'Epidemic' sometimes its almost more a feel than an actual gallop….
Another excellent video Jason, thanks 🙂
Just an observation… in the demo of the first riff your pick holding changes in the riff, sometimes your thumb appears to be bent at the first joint (on the "gallop" bits e.g. 200-0-300-0 ) and then it straightens (on the more even timed bits e.g 2-3-2) Is this something you're aware of? does it matter or am I scrutinizing too much instead of picking up my guitar and practising? 🙂

rock on!!!
????killer riffs ????????
Youre playing more of a 220-0 than 200-0.
JASON.. you totally need a whole video of like 5 riffs/parts of classic metal songs that super beginners can practice, but will actually help us specifically develop advanced techniques to build off of, etc. make a strong emphasis on taking those techniques to your own writing! this is one of my favorite ways to progress as a first year guitarist.. learn songs that are fun, but have good technique to build off of
great tips man, thanks!! been utilizing galloping more as i progress on to 5 ish months of playing
As soon as you played it megadeth came to mind
You make really cool videos and they recommended your channel to another person I met through YouTube. His channel is called Shred Ain’t Dead.
Just what the doctor ordered

Great video buddy????????
Galloping riffs may just be my favorite part of playing metal guitar, since I'm not much of a shredder…..yet.
Glad to see the LTD getting some screen time again. ????????
Giddy up ????
Hi Jason! I love your lessons. ????
I have made some riffs on my one. Using your ideas and inspiration. ???? And I have bought “The Riff Master course” But I suck at downstrokes. So i am stuck on the first lesson. ???????? But I get there…
Amazing work you do!! Best guitar channel on YouTube. ????
Riff 1: "oh yea I'm awesome"
Riff 2: "CRAP! I suck again"
Love galloping riffs! The foundations of thrash!!
I can't get enough of all those galloping rifts . Definitely my favorite sound in metal music . ????????
Oh, how I wish you were my dad
Waiting your CAGED system lesson, thnx
On through the dead of night. With the four horsemen ride….
Giddy yup! High ho silver ! Jk ???????? great sense of timing helps too
I used to be really tight with galloping riffs but after a decade without playing it's hard to build back up to that.
This is were my Timing gets off. Thanks for the video!
That's great! Thanks for that! ????
Galloping….my kryptonite
Hey Jason! Love the videos, but was wondering what the process of writing a riff looks like for you. ????
