Joe Bonamassa Talks Dumble Amps | Dipped In Tone

Go see Joe’s Dumbles in person: https://jbonamassa.com/tour-dates/

Dipped In Tone begins its partnership with Premier Guitar with Rhett Shull and Zack Broyles visiting Joe Bonamassa in Nerdville East, his Nashville home and museum. They talk vintage gear, guitar obsession, innovation versus tradition, and Dumbles. Many Dumbles … including a rare—even among these ultra-rare custom-built amps—example with a DI port for acoustic guitar made for the late songwriter Hoyt Axton. Bonamassa also explains his philosophy about taking guitars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on the road and to local gigs, and what the future holds in store for his collection of 500 instruments—every one with a story. Also, our hosts “dip” Chris Shiflett’s rig, offering the Foo Fighters guitarist a few “pointers” on rebuilding his massive pedalboard while ogling his refinished 1957 Les Paul and his custom-built Telecaster called “the Cleaver.” But before they dive deep, Schull shows off his recently acquired 1989 R9 Les Paul from Norm’s Rare Guitars, and Broyles shows off the new super-Muff style Positron Cascading Amplifier Distortion.

  • Gotta be honest… just never like this guy. There's something special about him. Also the Dumble thing is really foolish! (BS)

  • The average person will maybe get a couple amps in there life and maybe get a expensive favorite and stick to it. I think with rich guys it develops into a need/comfort to always have better and better sounding amps, so eventually they will eventually move on to a more expensive "better" amp. And then tone gets so refined it gets stale on recordings, even if you do only 1 or 2 takes to get a more natural sound when recorded, you might have just made the whole thing sound bad because you overcompliced finding the right amp/tone. But yeah, Joe Banamassa is like the king of the preppy clean rich guitar lawyers that buy out all of his billion signatures as soon as they are released. It all plays a big factor in why new gibsons are so expensive. But its also what keeps them and others in buisness and keeps there quality "up to standards". I dont think gibsons are going down anytime soon. And why are epiphones becoming as expensive as cheaper les pauls. Every passionate guitarist deserves one of there own dream amp and guitar before they die. Crazy how you just had to start a band in the 60s and your manager or label would provide you with equipment worth 20 grand today, or a buddy down the street. Now its get a 30$ temu guitar and a 100$ 5watt amp toaster pos recommended by some pansy on yt, and a 5$ plastic overdrive pedal, and then it sounds like shit and give up like many others.

  • Ayup. Four decades of hating my tone, because people told me "fifteen Watts is ALL you need!" well, its all YOU need, but it was a hateful, painful thing for me to endure. Every one of you should be ashamed.
Now everything is about a hundred watts, and several of the amps run through EVMs. Getting another Bruno this week, those are Dumble clones, and the Diaz is set to stun, but when I feel sloppy I turn up the Sewells to grind off the hard edges.

  • JB also talk about that “ping” on vintage guitars so…dunno that quick recovery just sound to me that very stiff amp filtering and negative feedback that Dumbles are known for, for me a very dry, cold, sterile sound that indeed it needs the dynamics of a fender tweed and Marshall to have a place, by itself is closer to transistors…

  • Thank god for this honest humble man. JB is a real musician not all that fake stuff. If JB makes a mistake we don't care he keeps going and the shows are still amazing. Real musicians!

  • The original Schroeder DB7 makes playing the easiest / most comfortable as possible for us beginners and intermediates, while also coaxing the maximum sonic qualities out of the virtuoso players like Joe.

How is it possible that you haven’t played one yet Joe? Or better yet, a Schroeder Dozer amp.

  • Meh. Overhyped. And you know it's so overhyped when the retail tag is 3000 times the price of the internal components, regardless of how it sounds.
No one in the audience would be able to tell what amp he's using just by listening to a performance. Maybe a player could pick out a Marshall depending on the gain level.
That being said, if you've got the $$…….

  • Can't understand the hate for this guy. He is one of the very few players making decent $$$ these days. Always thought he was a very good player but after hearing his slide playing on Cant Let Go – Live in Amsterdam I pushed him up to my top 10. Playing slide that well with perfect tone is super difficult, absolutely incredible performance. He deserves the amps he owns IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioQKULTa0dE

  • If the industry trends continue, In 50 years it's going to be the shitty, solid state, muti-effect combo amps( crate, line 6, peavey, etc.) That artists drool over.

  • What’s on his table? Other than the Tube Screamer. A bowl of Snark tuners, and what’s in the other bowl? Cleaning cloth’s or is that some kind of string lube or something?

  • Good guitarist know how to hide their mistakes. That’s one sign of a really good player.. just smile and do it again they’ll think it’s how the song is supposed to go..
