Fractal Audio FX8 Multi Effects | Review
“it’s easy to say that the FX8 is the most fully featured and best sounding multi effects unit on the market right now.”
Fractal Audio FX8 Multi Effects Review by Guitar Interactive Magazine. Reviewed in Issue 38 of Guitar Interactive Magazine by Tom Quayle.
Welcome to GI 38, another bumper edition of the world’s favourite online guitar mag!
We’ve three fabulous players featured inside – from the electric world, the amazing Paul Gilbert makes his long awaited debut, with a long interview filmed in his LA studio. Returning to the fold is the great Michael Schenker, filmed in London, and finally, as a Quiet Room Special, we have the incredible Antoine Dufour, the Canadian acoustic guitarist who not only gave us his time for an in-depth interview but also performed live in our studio. Whatever you do, don’t miss this!
As always, we’ve a packed issue of reviews, with an expanded Quiet Room section plus our usual full review line-up of guitars, amps, FX, basses, acoustics, home/project studio and live gear (not to mention the unstoppable Jaime Vendera!). All that plus our free tuition columns.
As for competitions, this is our best ever issue! We’ve got a signature Ibanez Paul Gilbert guitar, the amazing Seven Sisters FX pedals from Red Witch and handmade Manuel Rodriguez classical guitar ALL up for grabs in this issue’s competitions!

Guitarist namer
Tonex Pedal is the talk of town recently and acquired one two weeks ago and combined with FX8. I could say is it's a better alternative if your Kemper just died down which happened to me 🙂 Except for the dangling patch cables 🙂
No pops and clicks like EHX
Very Methaney
Great review! Thanks for taking the time.
You sound like Dominic Miller a bit.
Best review of the FX8!
very funny how dry Tom's facial expression is when he says "fantastic" and demonstrates thereafter, at 18:00mins
Tom and Guthire Govan are my favorite players.
The Chorus is so bad o_O a Zoom G3 sounds way better believe me ^^
Didn't sell me…excess talking contributed. I usually dig this dude's demos but kept in mind he demos on Fractal units. I didn't see a lot of functionality but a lot of talking about a lot of functionality. Want to snag my dollo then show me a unit that incorporates simulations of Fuzz pedals, and overdrive together with these admittedly cool effects that I can already conjure however pretty sweetly on my DAW.
Hi I got the fx8 Mark II how can I connect it for stereo sound using to amps
Looks cool- I am waiting for Fractal to release the nextgen with color LCD screen then I am up for it.
A lot of the songs I play need an acoustic and an electric guitar to play all the way through. Think "Over the Hills and Far Away" or "All The Young Dudes" type of thing. Till now, with my traditional old pedal board it's basically been impossible to get the right sound without switching guitars (which is only really good for recording) but not for playing live. What I need is an effects unit that can give me a really authentic acoustic tone so I could sit down with my Les Paul (for example) and just step on a switch to go back and forth between the two types of guitars. Will this unit do that? And how well will it do it? Thanks in advance.
May be a stupid question but can this be connected directly to my Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors and used as an Effects unit without connecting it to a preamp or an Amp? Would it give me distortion/ overdrive if used that way? What I mean is just the FX8 plugged into my Studio Monitors would work for recording ideas in Logic Pro X or does it necessarily have to be connected to a preamp/ amp?
Is it possible to invert the phase of either the left or right output of the FX8 pre out?
this fucking guy talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and fucking talks and you NEVER once get to hear different sounds other than his same lame ass delayed guitar with tremolos and shit and his annoying voice saying stuff about knobs and parameters. Where are the real capabilities of this processor?? Any other goddamn sounds???
You still haven't said anything about what amp you have it plugged into, is it a tube amp or a solid state????
Let me guess, you have to plug in the axe fx8 into a mesa boogie amp to get the tube tone correct????
Thats what everyone else is doing, so. I need to know, what does it sound like directly into a P.A.. or better yet, a line input to a recording device such as a computer. Directly from the unit into the line in because there is no USB for audio recording.
If you have to hook it up to a tube amp to get the tube tone, then I'm wasting my time here.
Gee . .Fractal dropped the price on these down to $999.99 USD. It's either this or a used Line 6 M13 .. hmmmmmm . . . . 🙂
Best review I've seen on this unit. Tom you rock! Your playing blows my mind.
Hey there, If you are in a preset… Can you make each scene within that preset have different Fx? Or do all 8 scenes within the preset have to be the same fx?
I'm sensing a large price tag…
Very awesome -tasty playing!!!
Finally, someone who's really good at guitar to demo these. Actually makes me want to buy this board!
Is there a way to use this unit with two amps and cabs simultaneously? If so, is there a way to get the cabs in phase with each other from the unit itself (I know there are some pedals that do this)? Also could you cut the signal to one of the amps via the scenes feature? Cheers!
Well done! Thanks for taking the time to demo this… One of the best demos I've found for the FX8
Tom , That guitar sounds amazing. Almost acoustic. Who makes your guitar? Thanks
Sounds gorgeous but glad I went for the helix instead, based on the simplicity and the amp models . I'd love to have a play on them both next to each other
20:36 beautiful spacey effect
my guitar hero. apart from his horrible beard.
