This video kicks off with some tasty Steely Dan–inspired licks on my PRS Custom 24 into the mighty Tone King Imperial Tri Tube Preamp, and then… we go deep. Is the guitar industry really selling tone — or are they just selling you a dream wrapped in ad copy and lacquer? From G.A.S. and influencer culture to signature models and overhyped gear, I break down the emotional trap that keeps so many players broke, distracted, and endlessly searching for magic in maple tops. I close it all out with an extended groove jam — because no matter what they sell you, the soul’s in the hands. ????

  • Agreed a new guitar will not make you a better player. But if a new guitar inspires you to pick it up more often, that will make you a better player. You have to put in your time to be better.

  • Hi again, Brad. Me, I play in this cover band I've been in for a little over 10 years now. I have to have "versatility" in the guitars I pick to get, as the band I'm in wants to keep things going, and wants as minimal dead space in between songs as possible, so they don't want me to be constantly switching guitars to do the next song on the set list…so I tend to want to have a live gig set up to where, unless I break a string, I can keep the same guitar strapped on me for the whole 4 hour gig. This year, PRS released a CE 24 Special Limited Edition, which is a bolt on 24 fret guitar with a figured top, that is an HSH model with a 5 way switch, and push pull coil tapping for the humbuckers…IMO, it is a great looking guitar, and is very versatile. We do very little country in this band, and if we do, it's usually Boot Scoot Boogie, haha, if someone in the crowd requests us to do something they can line dance to, so to do those gigs, I don't "need" a tele. I currently have an Ernie Ball Silhouette, that I consider a "one off" guitar, that is an HSH configuration, ebony fretboard, trem, figured roasted maple neck, Starry Night finish, 24 frets…but because the PRS CE 24 Special Limited Edition has the added coil tapping for the humbuckers, as well as the HSH configuration, it is the first 24 fret guitar that is "moderately priced" that I would consider selling my Ernie Ball in order to get the PRS, because of the more tone options vs the Silhouette I have. I don't know if I'll do it, but would like to.

  • My G.A.S. is a Dopamine hit N.G.D. is a replacement for lack of happiness this is why it is a syndrome. none of us want to actually accept that because it makes us feel broken. I've only been playing / learning for 4 years or so, I never heard the term GAS until I bought my first guitar. I've been through at least 10 – 12 guitars in that time frame probably more. I had 8 at one time not too long ago. I definitely spend more time window shopping then purchasing than actually practicing, I could have spent that money on actual in person lessons, than stumbling around on Youtube tutorials that I watch for 11 minutes and never again. Hell I just got a PRS Standard 24 – 08 2 days ago because it has all kinds of "tonal options" that is sitting next to me right now LOL. See what I mean, I still love this new journey and get excited after learning something new but I also know i'll get exactly what I put in, I always tell people I'm nowhere near where I should be after 4 years but much further than when I started. I realize now that I've had GAS for a long time no matter what the toy is I buy.

  • Excellent post Brad! I’ve got “high dollar” guitars in closets and under beds but depending on the job, I usually find myself gigging with ones that cost $300-$800. Lots of wasted money. CRAZY!!!

  • 99 times out of a 100 i don't even plug in, just play the electric guitar acoustically. still feel the need for a new electric guitar. how messed up is that? thankfully the next guitar will be a $300.00 tease guitar.

  • Some of the best sounding Gibson’s I’ve heard are the cheaper ones. They have a thin coat of lacquer and the bodies are thinner. Get one with a tight fitted neck joint and man do they resonate.

  • To be honest. I have a lot of guitars and amps and I can play anything on any of them. As far as guitars go if they are set up the way you like that’s the most important part. I do my own setups and I can grab anything and it feels good and plays good even if the neck shape differs. If I only could have one guitar it would be a super Strat with two humbuckers wired to have the coils split.

  • It was more with pedals for me. I then realized I’m a straight into the amp guy. I don’t use pedals unless I need a specific effect. I don’t like how it feels to have a bunch of processing in the signal chain. Sometimes I will watch a player who I know is great and they have all this processing getting in the way.

  • I went into GtrCtr to experience P90's one day. A slightly used PV '00-ish Firenza sounded better than a PRS 3xP90 thru a Bassman. $250 vs $2300! Yrs later a pro set-up transformed the 15'r fb played like butta'. The acoustic EQ resonance is the best balance I've found.

  • I've found over nearly 40 years of playing , buying , building , modding guitars . My abilities were what was lacking , it was never the guitars . When I realised that and got better at playing , I can now make any guitar sound pretty good ???? , I love a good cheap guitar that can be set up and sounds great , the cheaper the better !

  • When I was young, I was overwhelmed in Nashville, everyone had so many guitars, custom boards, amps, etc. A battle hardened veteran looked me dead in the eye said, “you only need one”, “Don’t waste your resources on guitars and gear, work on playing first; take lessons if you need to”.”you gotta put in the work”.
