Few guitarists have had a more illustrious career then G.E. Smith. From his run with Hall & Oates to his decade of leading the Saturday Night Live band, Smith has played with nearly everyone including Mick Jagger, Tina Tuner, Eddie Van Halen, Buddy Guy, Al Green, and Bob Dylan. Smith hung out with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger after soundcheck before a recent show at Nashville’s City Winery and gave an up-close look at his killer, old-school rig.
G.E. Smith’s lifelong No. 1 remains his 1952 Fender Esquire. Although the guitar is labeled an Esquire, it has had two pickups in it since Smith got it. It has been re-fretted twice, but other than that, nothing has changed during their half a century together.
Next up is G.E. Smith’s signature Fender Telecaster. This guitar takes design ideas from Smith’s old lap steel. The bridge pickup is screwed right into the wood and the inlays mimic a vintage Fender lap steel. G.E. wanted the store models to be finished in dakota red, but Fender put the guitar into production with candy apple red. This prototype is the only one with the original dakota red finish.

GE is a legend.
Celestion Blues are rated 25w.
Coolest guitar player in history of Television.
Hasn't even got a guitar stand. Puts all these 'must own a vintage guitar' nerds to shame. Fabulous guy and player.
dude you got tape on your shoe
Yes, to the topic somebody will know and remember: The famous "Roland Space Echo", those echos where just based on bandmachines, thats why they needed a service or repair from time to time, and everybody was happy when the analog and digital delays came on the market so they could throw the bandecho away, thats why so few survived.
This is way cool
Most of the videos he does are about equipment. Would love to hear him play more. Unfortunately he's not really that good.
I remember seeing Sting play with the police in 1981 including the Greensboro Colosseum in North Carolina. And the league guitarist Andy was dancing over the board on the floor and changing the sound of his guitar. It was like magic.
This interview, I know how to listen❤
This interview, I know how to listen❤
This. Blew. My. Mind.
Shut up and play
Way overrated, what's he doing these days
I've never been impressed by the guy not for one second
I saw GE play a blues festival in Arlington Virginia. He killed it. Fantastic player and a great ambassador for music.
Dude is the very definition of a CLASS ACT.
Baffled he doesn’t have guitar stands to those treasures
GE Smith is humble and amazing! Great job, John. Thank you for asking GE to play the pedals. Well done!
In the 80's and 90's, would spot GE out n about NYC nightlife scene. He ALWAYS had a gorgeous lady by his side. Very cool guy.
Alot of us players bought Fender because they were cheaper than Gibsons at the time, back in the early 60's..I bought mine because I had an album of Freddy King stuff and he was playing a Telecaster on the album cover…two good reasons.
I love John's taped together sneaker. I love GE Smith's mother!
One of my favourite rundowns. Could listen to GE all day
Glad to see that GE has been blessed with health and has taken care of himself. Adored his work on the “Blues White album” (CD). What a fantastic display and collaboration with some fab blues singers and guitarists. Of course, he has many more notches on his gtr case, but that is a killer download/purchase. Thank you, GE (Mr Smith to me). You are genuine and inspiring. May God bless you forever. Cheers/ Slainte.
Roctor John ????????⚕️????✌️♾️????. ????????????????????????????????????????????????
G.E. Smith is that dude
My favorite episode of rig rundown is the one with Nigel and Rob Reiner
the pedals are like a rudimentary synthesizer!
Down to earth, guitar slinger. A legend, man.
I have a Nocaster from 2000, from the Eldred Custom Shop. It’s a beast. That was a great period for the Fender Custom Shop
GE Smith rules!!!!
If he wants to admit it or not. He s a legend in the industry. He deserves a lot more recognition than he gets.
Skinny jeans are out of style thank God
John have you taped your shoes? buy new shoes dude.
GE The Tele your Mom bought you for your birthday neck date Jan 13 52 My birthday Jan 13 1955 . I’m sure when I was at Trod Nossel when you were I saw you using that one with The Scratch Band. Love the interview. You got me a 69 P bass back in the day for $150 bucks boy those A &P prices have changed .
My favorite part ????
GE Smith: PINE! 12:42
John: hahahah okay, alright. Very cool????
I love G.E. Smith. Class act!
GE Smith is a str8 up pmp daddy! Nobody oozes sensuality and those faces i mean come on remember SNL yeah love at first site! my golly GE could just get you with one glance, flash of the eye, and bam GE Mac Daddy Smith owned you. John look like a giant rooster in love in this.
GE is one of the all time greats. But man, that effect chain is kinda super natural. Tuner -> trem -> OD wow. And a comp at the end before the preamp. It's like he dumped a box of pedals onto the floor and whatever order they landed in, was the universe speaking to him.
Was it a Binson echorec unit ??
Every tone bone i had broke in a month
