Lesson: Chromatic Scale Exercises and Variations for Classical Guitar

Get my new technique book here: https://www.thisisclassicalguitar.com/classical-guitar-technique-exercises-scales-arpeggios/

This exercise is from my new book Classical Guitar Technique: Essential Exercises, Scales, and Arpeggios. The 122 page book includes: Practice Routines, Tips, 100 Open String Exercises, 120 Giuliani Arpeggios, Scales, Slur Exercises, Shifts, Finger Independence, Barre, Tremolo, Common Harmonics, and much more.

This lesson is on chromatic scales and variations and follows the alignment and finger placement exercises for the left hand. Chromatic scales are great practice for putting the one-finger-per-fret hand position into action. Remember to go slowly (at your own speed for your level) and aim for a smooth legato sound. When shifting, keep the thumb behind the 2nd finger and have the arm move the hand up and down the neck without altering your hand position.

  • after one month practice it, the hardest part is keeping fingers close and aligned to the fret. how is it possible?

  • Hi. i got a question. is it necessary to have the pad you got on top of the guitar body? i see you slide your Right hand forearm down and up while you are playing the string's. as i understand you might not put all your right hand weight on your forearm. so doesn't that make your shoulder in pain?

  • Thanks for this really detailed video!

I've been reading about left hand position. How important is it that the pinky also stays ready just above its guitar fret? I'm an adult beginner, and for now my pinky really wants to stay more upwards if i don't focus all my attention on it… Should i keep focusing during the exercise?

  • Try this… When descending, plant all four fingers at the same time, just release one at a time as each note is played. You can try the same thing while playing the Segovia scales. Just a thought…
