When the Clean Tone is as Good as Fender!?
The Mesa Boogie California Tweed 2:20 6V6 1×12 is one of the most impressive guitar amplifiers I have tested. This guitar amplifier can be switched between 20-watts, 10-watts, and 1-watt for home practice. This is right up there with some of the best Fender clean tones and is a great lightweight guitar combo.

What pickups do you have in the Kiesel? Thanks!
I picked one up lightly used for a good price. It’s okay but would not pay full price for it. I find the sound too compressed no matter how I EQ it. The wattage switch is very cool. I’ll give it a bit more time and play around with it. but probably sell it.
It would have been nice if they had added a tremolo circuit, maybe would have made it too big or heavy though.
best demo of this amp…
This video has put the California Tweeds in my list. It is amazing…I am looking for a 6V6 powered amp, 1×12 combo, power selection,…with tube reverb. (tremelo would be a nice add)
10" version with BlackBird 40 is better imo…
Too many options I don't need
Handwired?
Definitely sounds good, definitely too expensive
Years ago a mate of mine had a very early Boogie. Had a single E120 JBL I think, it's a LONG time ago. It may have even had switching, 60-100 watts(?) But whatever it had, it was REALLY LOUD!!!. And he loved that bit.
Shane, would you be comfortable using this amp for an outdoors gig? My band often plays outside — food truck festivals, etc — and our musical style is R&B, soul, blues. Nothing heavy, and our drummer has more of a jazz touch.
Another great demo Shane , great playing , great amp
How is crunch/overdrive on this ? Do you have to crank it to get any overdrive , or can you get dirty at low volumes ?
$4600 and they won't provide a footswitch! Taking the piss and overrated. Only thing going for it is the Blackbird.
The Mesa’s are currently discounted! I compared the Fenders against the Boogie 20 and there is a huge difference at higher settings. There is a harshness with most Fenders. Both Amps sound bad with high Reverb. I purchased the California Tweed 20. Luv it!
Another great review Shane.
Peter from the Gold Coast here.
Just wondering what those two mics are you used ? (sounds so good, though your playing is a big factor ????)
I've bought 3 or 4 different boogies over the last 40 years. Could never really connect with them and ended up selling them. Love my peavey classic 20 mini head. And lately my blackstar studio 10 6l6 version.
Nice demo 🙂
Another great video and presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Check out the Mesa Subway Blues: 1 channel, volume, EQ, and reverb. Focus is on clean. 20W. A similar build to old vintage amps!
you can buy two peavey classic 20 watt amps and they sound as good as this boogie for me better
f I want the sound of a Fender Amp, why buy a Mesa Boogie which costs the same as a vintage Fender and which will never sound the same?
If you keep playing at over 90db without any ear protection, you'll be sorry. You're going to end up with severe permanent damage to your ears and permanent tinnitus. Be forewarned.
You're playing a Strat disguised as a Tele, lol ????????????
I have the first gen pre gibson 40 w version. Love love love it. Had an oversize zilla 12” cab built for it put the jensen blackbird 40 in…sounds great…had to move the cab away from the corner of the room where it was to mitigate boominess…
Great amp!
thats not clean ??????its distorted
The only way for me to evaluate this amp, besides yt demos, is in Amplitube 5, thus the question: which do you prefer for its sound in the room – this or 10' version?
