Chase Bliss Automatone Vs Best Of The Best [Klon, KOT, Fuzz Face & More] – That Pedal Show

Can the Automatone replace some of the best overdrive pedals of all time? We find out…

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the show. In this episode, Dan and I are putting the genre-defining Chase Bliss Automatone Preamp MkII up against a handful of our favourite ever overdrive, fuzz and boost pedals. We’ve never found a do-it-all overdrive yet that even comes close to actually doing it all, but by golly, Chase Bliss and Benson have done something extraordinary with the Automatone MkII.
Does it nail every sound exactly? Nope. Does it come close enough for you to be asking serious questions about all those drives on your board? Well, maybe…

Questions arising…
Mick, how do you have your KOT configured?
Completely standard. It’s not the high-gain version, red side set to overdrive, yellow side set to boost, no extra treble on the internal trim pot.

What is that Les Paul?!
Gibson Custom True Historic ’57 Les Paul Goldtop, Tom Murphy aged. It belongs to my good friend Neville Marten, who has kindly loaned it to me for a while.

Enjoy the episode!

  • If you don't need MIDI, Walrus Silt+Voyager is better than all these. I have the Tomato for the MIDI, and its sounds amazing, but needs a massive noise gate at high gain.

  • I had another audition of the Automatone on Saturday, and well, I've pulled the trigger. It's going to be surrounded by a Kingsley Page and Mason which should be a very versatile and organic drive/boost/fuzz set-up.

  • Not mad about it, but I’m having a hard time believing a tele into a turned up el84 type amp needs more treble! Lol. Maybe I just enjoy more mids but it seems plenty bright enough to me

  • Sooo Brothers and Condor or Automatone?? Right now I have Brothers and Condor together, which are great. But thinking about making the switch.

  • I’m getting to the point where I might just have an Automatone and an Eventide H90, and that’s my whole board.

  • Had to go back and rewatch this one. Most surprised by the fuzz face. Got to get one. Thanks gents!

  • One thing they didn’t touch on in this video in regards to the Automatone is the expression pedal control. If you want something very similar (it as good or better) to rolling the guitar volume off, you can use an exp pedal to control the Tomatotone to match the guitar volume knob

  • Have you guys combined the Chase with the Kernom Ridge? I’m loving the Kernom so I’m going to experiment and pick up a Chase to combine them at times. Lots of options! Maybe this will end up replacing my POT ????

  • I think the first guys who invented the OD pedals where genius and had compassion for our poor ears.

  • Now try the same thing but with a MXR Classic 108 Fuzz, Benson preamp/any nice OD and Boss EQ-200 (pre and post the OD) instead of the Automatone. My guess is that EQ pedals are way more important than any magic diode or transistor.

  • Too much talking. And when you say, “I will do that every time just to let you know,” I was super bummed out because I never wanted to hear that again. Guy on the right, you harshed my mellow. Show me the opponent and the challenger pedal, I want to see this thing take a shot at the title of all overdrives, but their was too much verbal noodling.

  • Holly Molly, you really nailed those sounds!!! ;o Insane flexibility from Tomatotone and world class tweaking from you, guys!

  • If you have an automatone, can you program into a pedal that you want a replica of a tube screamer going into another sound from the automatone? In other words, can you stack different sounds?
