Small Amp, Small Price, BEAUTIFUL SOUND! (Valeton TAR-20G)

This is such a cool little guitar amp! I was really impressed with the clean and mid-gain tones from this tiny, but feature packed, 20 watt “desktop” amp. The Valeton TAR-20G Asphalt costs only $125 but might be a perfect clean guitar recording amp. Nice, clean, crisp, Fender like tones. What do you guys think?

The guitar I’m using for this demo is the incredible, new Wolf Guitars S1, from All In One Guitars. Maple, walnut, ash, neck-through construction.

  • Good presentation and playing. I bought this amp and now I'm looking for a small cabinet that I can use for home playing of this amp and the Quilter superblock US amp that I'm planning to buy. I play mostly clean, blues, jazz…Do you have any suggestions? Keep on rocking. Subscribed.

  • I bought this item in Aug 2024. (cranstjs). I used it a handful of times through low power 8 ohm speakers and it worked ok. I decided that these computer desk type speakers didn't sound that well with it. So I have a Princeton guitar cab that has one 10" speaker that is 8 ohm and 100 watt rating. Only played in my studio. I plugged that speaker into the Valeton amp and it sounded much louder due to the effiency of that speaker. BUT, if I raised the volume high on it and played for less than a minute, the amp would shut down. I had to power it off and then back on again. This happened at least six times. Which tells me there is something very wrong that can't handle it's full power through a guitar amp speaker. Even lessening it from full power to say 8 on volume and gain all the way down can make it shut down. Could be a defective unit since I don't see anyone else complaining of this in comments. I'm trying to get eBay seller to give me info about under warranty return or repair.

  • Can you use the fx return with a modeler to function solely as a mini power amp for your modeler and a guitar cab?

  • I have this amp and a Hotone British Invasion Nano amp sitting on top of a Randall RG8 cabinet in my bedroom for practice, the TAR amp sounds like a blackface Fender.

  • I make little guitar cabs, and sell them, using the Valeton to audition them. When folks ask about the head, I say it’s just a rinky-dink Chinese solid state thing, which is true. It really helps sell the speakers!

After a while, you may get bored of the tone, but for the price, the digital reverb and gain/eq settings are SO good at modeling tube saturation/overdrive/compression/crunch of a much pricier amp.

  • I have this one and it's bass brother and the sound is really impressive for the money. If you have different cabinets to plug it in to there is hardly any limit to the sound you can get out of it. Love it, well, love them both actually.

  • Would you know if the volume knob is for the power section? Or is it for the preamp? Thanks!

  • I did the same as the next guy bought it after seeing the video, I've an Orange Terror stamp and I think this will sound good using both together I hope!

  • It is a sweet little amp. I use it as a pedal platform clean. I have one on a pedal board and I am ordering another one that will just sit on the speaker cabinet.

  • Any reason you couldn't run the send from one amp, like a Joyo Bantamp, into the return of this Tar20g to use it as a second power amp (running a second cab)? I was just wondering if it would be a good candidate for boosting volume for live play.

  • Just joking: Is this a towel or a wig on your head? It looks a bit unnatural, so blacker than black and shiny, like ancient Egyptian women's hairdo.

  • What Max does really helps guitar players find great gear for not a lot of money. A great example is this Valeton Head. After seeing the demo on it, I am definitely buying one … now. Thank you Max.

  • I’m trying to pair this amp to my Boss Katana 212. I just want to use the Katana as a speaker cab for this mini amp. Any suggestions? I’m currently using it with a Block Rocker speaker, but the rhythm tones that I get are awful! When I use delay and modulation pedals through the effects loop, I get good tones for solo. Please help! I don’t want to buy a separate Cab to use with this amp.

  • I started looking at those cause I saw the bass version on ebay. I have a short scale bass just for looping and playing over at home. That guitars version may be a good apartment rig to

  • I needed something small and portable since I want to work and still be able to travel. So this seems perfect. Just ordered one using your link! Looking forward to getting it tomorrow.

  • I bought this thing based on this video and I'm here to tell you that every bit of this true. This thing is a game changer for us tiny house weirdos, but regardless, this will always be in my travel setup.

  • I got one of these recently to replace a Class A combo amp I sold and I've been quite surprised how good it sounds through a Weber 12" Blue Dog speaker. I'd love to see a comparison with a hybrid amp like the Joyo BantamP series. Those are also 20W, but with a tube pre-amp, will those be louder than this ss amp?

  • There are many great Blues guitarists out there that you could get some great inspiration from. Maybe if you find one that you like and maybe let their style kind of rub off. You're already a very good player. I don't think it would be difficult for you. Rock on buddy!

  • Oh man I am so glad I watched this review, I was looking for a compact amp with good clean tones that has a send and return so I can loop in all the pedals I need for all tonal effects and then just cut them and come back to a pure clean tone if I need to. We don't need large tube amps in our minimal home studios, 20W is well good enough through say a good 212 cab or even a nice celestion 112, it's going to be perfect for your situation. Like some of the comments below I have just bought one of these on your recommendation! Greetings from Scotland, love the channel and am also an aviation geek so I am following with interest your PPL venture! Well done man! 🙂 Roddy.
