My Review Of The Marshall MG50GFX Combo Amp

This is my review of the Marshall MG50FX Combo Amp. I purchased it used from Guitar Center for jamming with friends and as an alternative to my Marshall DSL20, which is why I wanted a combo amp with built in effects. This is a great little amp. Very loud if you need it to be. I think it’s an amp you could gig with.
Just a Note: I did the best I could to record what I hear in the room using a SM57 mic but I don’t think you can appreciate how good it actually sounds through YouTube.

Thanks for watching!

  • Were these amps redesigned some years back? The year I started playing guitar around 2002 I had a Marshall MG 50 but it didn’t have all the features this one has. Or maybe it was the MG 30?

  • I agree that OD 1 (with boost pedal) can probably cover all your tones if you're adept at using your guitar's controls. Crunch is great for '70s-'80s classic rock tones. The amp excels at giving back what you put into it! I highly recommend the 4-button MG footswitch for performing live with this amp; it's programming is really flexible. I use button 1 to toggle Clean/Crunch channels, button 2 for OD1/OD2 channels, button 3 for FX on/off, and button 4 for tap tempo. I have only two complaints with the MG50FX/CFX/GFX. (1) The effects loop inserts external effects AFTER the built-in effects, so you can't use a noise gate in the loop to reduce noise without chopping off the delay repeats. (2) The switches on the 4-button footswitch are not very durable and will fail within a couple years. I'd love to see Marshall update this amp with expression pedal jack (for volume and wah, etc.), at least 8 memory slots for presets, a pre/post effects routing option for the loop, and more robust 4- or 6-button footswitch with brighter display (you can't see the tuner LEDs outside on a bright day). Maybe an Effects 2 knob with Wah, Envelope, Tremolo, and several Pitch Shift options (think Digitech Drop).

  • Thank you. Great video.. I want to get one of these.. but so much negativity out there… This one showed it does have the Marshall character. I have a katana 50, it has some good tones… but sometimes I just need to have a hard driving Marshall to rock out… This seems like a decent deal!

  • Marshall have stopped production of these great amplifiers and I suspect they may be a sought after amp in just a few years. I do think digital amps have gone too complicated and these are ideal for those who just want simplicity and play, rather than messing with apps etc. Plug, play and practice to be a good player is more important than gadgets is my advice. Great little no nonsense review ????

  • Effects seem pretty cool. But I feel there’s lack of distortion with this one

  • I had one years ago before I got my Line 6 Amplifi 150. It sounded good, but I wanted something that did more. That's why I got the Line 6. I didn't know any better at the time.
