The sultan of sludge dishes on the solid-state amps and key stomps that help him rattle walls and break necks.
Perry Bean met up with the Melvins’ King Buzzo shortly before his code-violating loud show at Nashville’s sweatiest club, the Exit/In. King Buzz showed his unpretentious yet absolutely effective approach to his inspiring tone.

Bad hair day.
I’ve been working in cinemas full time for almost 30 years. QSC power amps, 16 hours a day, 364 days a year, they do the job. I must have run 200 of them, had to swap out maybe 3.
i played thru a solid state 1×15 amp for years with a dirt pedal…sounded gnarly
tube-schmube. I had a great tone out of my solid state Marshall.
I used to have the same power amps
please note when you re-release these old ass videos.
Wish we could have heard it
Reliability and consistency are the number one and number two qualities when you’re a touring band. That’s solid state.
The Lime Spiders say hello, Buzz. You can leave the royalties you owe them on the fridge.
Crown power amps…
This was filmed like 6 or 7 years ago
i don't fuckin care.
But then again his tone is a wall of mud
Used Hilbish, then the moment Sunn reissued the Beta and he turned his back immediately lol
Buzzo is the King.
People get too hung up on tubes, even the interviewer. I personally haven't owned a tube amp for 20 years & i dont miss it or sound any different.
The host guy really needs to stop talking over the people he's interviewing. I'm sure he's nervous but dude, let the artists finish answering the question.
I love solid state amps too.
The dimed-out Dyna Comp would explain why his rhythm playing sounds like scrubbing dishes on "Stoner Witch"
I ran FOH for The Melvins at a club in Iowa City in the early 90s. They were amazing—but they weren't even the loudest band that week. (That would be Jack Endino's Skin Yard, which played the next night.)
Anyone know a tech who will fix SS or digital amps? Anyone? I’ll wait…. ????
Oh look, it’s Roger. I guess he had to take time off from complaining about better bands than his. Mudhoney wasn’t influenced by The Melvins, it was the Stooges and Blue Cheer. He’s so up his own ass.
Buzz was exercising patience here. Americans generally need to try to emulate Buzz more.
For live performance, whether you are playing Wembley or Clancy’s Pool Hall or anything in between, solid state technology is all you need. Not a fucking soul in the crowd will know the difference.
hahaha from now on whenever I think someone talks too much, I'll give em my hand "thanks a lot man", but stay and not say a word or listen anymore.
How are you going to do a whole rig rundown and then not let us hear it?
An innovator or a complete retard? In my honest opinion the answer to that question would be “YES, absolutely!”
Buzz is such an underrated guitar player whose influence is often lost on ppl who don’t take the time to figure out who he has influenced. For example – if you are a tool fan, you might want to google Adam Jones and Buzz Osborne (you could throw in Mike Patton if you’re looking for a great pic)
Interesting. I always wonder why they don't have the musicians play through the rig for a minute after talking about.
Was not expecting a Bobby Rock/Honky reference this morning, but here we are.
What a treasure.
The first time I saw the Melvin’s he was running a Crate GX-15 combo amp as a preamp into a crown power amp and into a pair of 4x12s, it was nuts
Buzz was born for this.
It's funny he said most overdrives are too fuzzy????
where is Monster Tone??…
We use Crown poweramps for guitar aswel.
Youtube amps sucks!
And no tones or sounds were played at all.
an ODB 3 for guitar distortion!
oh shit the maxed out mxr comp is my feedback trick
dude gets it. always has.
I am not sure if Guitarists know about something called EQ. When you want more bass (because solid state are not warm or whatever) than turn the bass up or something.
Some mf's really think that you have to put the knobs on"noon" and they are playing with their eyes.
Play something then…
Isnt this from 2015?
ODB 3 is really underated pedal
Yeah don't bother showing us what all this crap sounds like, just saying you like it is good enough
Polytone 1×15 combos rule!
For those who don't realize, this video is like 10 years old and isn't Buzz's current touring rig
THE MELVINS F00KING RULE.
