Forget Marshall, Forget Fender, You Need a Peavey Classic 20 – Long Term Amp Review

So they were on sale for $650 up until recently, the price has gone back up to their standard retail price since I shot this. However, I still stand by my thumbnail statement.

I absolutely love this amplifier. Anything I play through it sounds lovely and I truly think this is the exact kind of valve amp that MOST players should have.

As always, if you enjoyed like and subscribe please!

  • Rock, grunge, rockabilly, jazz. Bbe in loop for metal or Nady ms100a. Lpb1 by ehx or ep boost the front, or jhs bonsai.

  • I have had my peavey 20 mh over a year now. I wouldn't trade it for any other amp. It's so versatile. Great pedal platform as well. But like all tube amps, you need to crank it to make it shine. 100 times better than blues jr, at any volume. The only weak point is the reverb. I have been experimenting with bias settings, I like better when its on the hot side, so I keep the back open.

  • Try to forget Marshall, but it is impossible. Still way better – from DSL and above.

  • I think ever since they moved production to China after saying on the TV show Undercover Boss that they weren't going to do that, a lot of people turned their backs on Peavey.

I don't know if quality suffered with the move, but I think one of their big selling points up to that point was being affordable AND made in USA… at least, as affordable as a US made product could be.

  • 6 / 10 you didn't demo the boost on the footswitch and didn't explain that the boost is only accessible via the footswitch, switch 2. (it's a dual footswitch) Also there's a channel button on the amp, out for channel one (clean) press in for channel 2 (dirty) For the the footswitch, switch1 to switch channels the button on the amp has he pressed IN..

  • Give me one of these over any small Fender all day long and actually over the Mini 6505 too probably. The Peavey Classic series are some how some real sleeper amps anything from fenders clean tones to Marshall distortion (not modern modded Marshall) but it approaches JCM 800 levels of gain . They will surprise you.

  • I have it and it is fantastic. I am using with a Celestion 12 Vintage 30 and I could not be more happy

  • I had the 6505mh and loved it, but it didn't have a great clean side. After some other videos that compared all of them they said the Classic was the best all around. Mine is getting shipped now!

  • Good review and nice playing, thank you! I have one of these and I love it. Somehow these amps have snuck under the radar with a lot of Guitar players. I exclusively use channel one and when I want gain or high gain, I use my pedals and it's a great platform. Combined with my Mesa boogie 112 cab with a Jensen blackbird speaker. it's sonic heaven. I refuse to buy a blues Junior made from cheap particleboard!

  • Have this running through the Classic 212-c cab. Sounds great even though I usually prefer Jensen Alnico speakers, this combination of the 20 MH and 212-c cabinet with the two different Celestions in it just works. Also addressed the footswitch either/or situation by getting the Switch Doctor (SDPEAV-CL20-MH) 4 button footswitch which allows me to plug in to booth inputs on the back of the amp at the same time and control Channel, Boost, Reverb and FX Loop on/off with just one footswitch.

  • These new spikey/sharp logo heads have a new circuit over the oval logo. It sounds great. It’s Marshall-JCM-esque with a modern edge.

  • Dude, no more Amplifier Videos without a single picture of the 'back plate'. Let's pretend a deaf guy wanna dive into it without cheesy stuff. Buy the way, very ????️ one. I don't know. Namastè.

  • Such an interesting video. I've had a Classic 20 in my shopping cart for months but kept looking at the DSL40CR. The reverb was becoming more and more important for me and I sense Peavey wins on that point. Your video helped me sort out a lot of things. Was leaning toward the 20 combo, but nibbled at the idea of using the 20 head with an Orange 2×12 with the Neo Creambacks also. I've got a Marshall Studio Vintage Plexi and a '68 Fender Custom Deluxe Reverb,,,,, maybe this Peavey is just the best new flavor for me. Thanks for this well-balanced review.

  • Fun fact, I have this (well, the first couple of years version with the oval stamp logo instead of the full size 'Lightning' logo, identical otherwise) with the matching 112 cabinet. It comes with a V30, and I'd bet the 212 cabinet uses 2 of them. So, essentially, you're getting pretty close what it should sound like anyhow with that Orange cabinet. Can't speak for the 212, but the 112 has a removable panel in the back to get that open back sound if you so choose. Great, versatile fella for most stuff. If I had to compare it to a guitar, I'd say P90 semi-hollow. I disagree with that reverb, though. It sounds like a mismash of plate reverb and slow chorus as you run the knob over half. I'm not saying it's horrible, but the spring reverb older Peaveys had was much better.

  • I'm a Marshall type guy and have never looked much into Peavy. But that looks beautiful. Do they have a crunch style amp, don't need high gain.

  • I’ve got a Classic 100 that I absolutely love but just don’t play anymore because I don’t need that volume. I’d love to find a buyer/good home for it someday.

  • I play an older deltablues 2-10 ( weber alnico speakers)….sounds as good as my friends matchless

  • No to the head. A combo with a boost button yes. I found this head boring and bland. The combo is better, especially when you patch to a 212 cab. The head is for guys that don’t want any gritty cut.

  • You haven't a clue what you're doing or talking about. Like Fender, Marshall. boogie and your 20 watt peavey 20 is eye candy on the outside and landfill garbage on the in. It won't last or keep up with a well built 18 watter like a Suhr Badger pre 2009 Tone King etc. the tubes suck as does the overdrive channel. Less than a $100 in parts. i hate shills and bullshit

  • I love my Marshall DLS40CR, and wouldn't trade it for a thousand dollars. Okay, maybe a thousand but only if you threw in another tube amp so I can buy the DSL40CR again.

  • Orange TH30 for $700 to 750 used is a much better choice. No reverb but, way better tone.

  • Isn't there a difference between power scaling, and attenuation of a cranked power section at full power.
    Nice sounds.

  • Peavey has made great amps at various price points for years. People stray away because they still hold the stigma of an “old man’s”amp…don’t fall for this.

  • I own the Classic 100 no longer made. It's called the 100 because that's exactly what it weighs. 8 EL 38's, so you can cook a hotdog on top while you play. I can get every tone in the world for the most part, cleans and high gain. I own many amps but I have a speacial place for this one. I grew up playing the 50 watters (cheap and great with pedals), but this 100 would hang with any amp out there and beat a lot of them.

  • Mama Kihn? Nice …

I currently use a Dr. Z Z plus and a Divided by 13 AMW39 … of course I started my young noise making career on Peavey gear so I have a soft spot for this company's stuff … I could have saved a shit ton of cash as well …. but … I have zero regrets … my /13 will never leave me … the Z is earning similar status … killer video … sub'd, etc. Cheers!

  • If you love 70s southern rock and country, you love Peavey and probably don’t know it.

  • Close. The amp you're looking for is the Peavey Classic 20 combo, not the amp head. If you think the amp head is a good amp, wait until you try the combo. Dollar for dollar, it was the best amp on the market in its time.

  • Thanks for the good review and your opinions. On paper I always thought this looked like a great amp for many players looking for a practical head. For some reason though it never gained much popularity. Always wanted to try one. A few years ago sold my Peavey Classic 30. Nice amp but to get it to sound good it needed the volume up a lot and it really rattled the windows. Thanks again.
