►A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I’m Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician, on the road at age 17-19, then went part-time ever since, holding ‘day-careers’ like chef (red seal papers), spiritual health care while raising a family. As a producer I’ve made hundreds of my own songs for media and award winning documentaries etc. I’ve been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, playing International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I like to explore grunge, pop rock and alternative, alt-folk / acoustic fingerstyle guitar, ambient electronic and classical as well. Recently i ‘discovered’ shoegaze and lo-fi. I have a home studio that is ramping up for lots more music so stay tuned.

Here's a mid-80s original recording of our power trio featuring Shawn on drums (and myself on guitar, Alan Brearley on Bass/Keys/Vox)—very very 'Rush'-y : https://youtu.be/be9T5VP7R-A
I was a touring drummer for many years. Had a kit of Roland TD-20s. Soundmen love them. Covered Limelight and Freewill note for note in a rock band. Peart was perfect for what they created. Anika is a monster, better than Peart, IMO. She was excellent with Jeff Beck. As good as Vinnie Colaiuta with Beck in her musical choices, maybe better. And Vinnie is my favorite drummer. I've been watching her for years. It'll be interesting to see what she does with it. I'm very much looking forward to it.
About ticket prices… I’m 72 and I never got to see them live. This is a dream come true. Anika is going to totally kick ass; anyone who says differently is truly demented. Have you heard her chops?? No, it’s not Neil, but she is thrilling to listen to. I know the guys are going to give her a long leash. It would be dumb not to. As you say, the signature bits everybody knows are going to be there; other than them, it’s going to be all Anika, and it’s going to be a “rush”. She is just too good not to be skin-crawling. $$ I paid $3,000 for two tickets 6th row, dead center seats (includes parking ; – ) for the very last U.S. show (Arizona, Dec. 2026) before they head back to the motherland and it will be one of the most memorable shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen hundreds!! Best money I ever spent (and I’ve spent a lot!) I am sooo psyched!!!
There are perhaps millions of technically proficient and very skillful drummers out there, as Neil was obviously, but Neil also had that Different factor. You can just play a certain 'drum sample' of a Rush song and you know it is from a Rush song and you know which Rush song its from. The thing that struck me about Anika is that she not only has the required proficiency and skill elements, but also the Different factor, which is SO incredibly rare, despite not hearing one Rush cover from her. She will be different from Neil, but she will also be Different from all the others, the most critical quality. I think Geddy and Alex made a wonderful choice.
Please stop saying "this chick"! It's demeaning. She is a 42-year-old woman. Show a little respect. By the way, she speaks fluent English.
She's German so you have to pronounce every syllables: A ni ka Nil Les (like in "less butter"). She his an unbelievable drummer.
24:45. "Her playing is far superior to her music". I agree. There appears to be a new type of songwriting which is more less scafolding for the drummer. I can listen to her band's songs, they are melodic tunes and all, but if it weren't for the drumming I probably wouldn't. And that is a good thing because it retains focus on the drums which is often lost in other styles of songwriting. This is not to denigrate the other players in her band, they all play incredible solos.
The annoying part is the accomodating video. It will focus on the guitar player knowingly playing a boring supporting roll when what the audience really wants is to watch is Anika's pedal work. Put the camera on the kit, split screen top and bottom please.
Ditto when there is another percussionist. We want to see more of him in order to isolate his playing from hers, and more importantly, how they interact. My message to videographer, focus on the druming not random trivia.
you need to check out paulina villarreal, drummer for the three sister mexican band called “thr warning”. drumeo drummer of the year and she sings to boot.
I've bought tickets for 3 shows. 1 in Chicago and 2 in Charlotte. I get that they are higher than expected but certainly can be purchased for much less than mentioned in this video. Look for tickets that are unobstructed aisle seats around $200 each.
Rush was not emailing parts to each other you old fool
????Shawn Bryan, what do you think of Thomas Lang? I've seen Terry Bozzio, Dave Weckl, Mike Terrana, Virgil Donati, Greg Bissonette, Deen Castronovo, Tony Royster Jr.& Mike Portnoy, But I've never seen anyone as technical and complicated as Thomas Lang!! That also incorporates a lot of 4-way Independence playing!!
By the way, what she does with 8th accents in 16th triplets over 4/4 she also does with quintuplets.
I think Anikka Niles Is Excelent drummer nothing more nothing less but Billy Cobham Is MUCH BETTER
She’s Dave Weckl with soul
You nailed it. In one of their clips Geddy said she'll play his iconic fills as Neil but can do her own thing.
Wow, Im not a drummer but I really enjoyed your technical insight. Been into her drumming for quite a few years. All I can say is I love watching her drum. She is so musical.
ACHTUNG! Yes! Anika Nilles is "Drums Virtuoso!"
Neil being a pillar….
Please pronounce his last name correctly.
Funny that you said, "The boys are back in town." because my very first rock concert was Queen and Thin Lizzy opened for them. 🙂
I'm looking forwards to hearing them play and I'm also hoping they'll put out some new music even if it is instrumentals only.
Anika also plays on digital drums too I just saw a video clip of her playing some.
She is just extraordinary! No question she can play every part of Neil Peart note-by-note if she wants to.
The question is; does she? And even if she does – it certainly won't sound the same. She obviously love low tuning, and on every single video available, she play on a 3/4-tom kit with a single pedal bass drum.
I would even appreciate if they play one or two of /her/ songs!
I heard you mentioned John Ballones Music in London Ont and I grew up there and we rented an electric piano there in the early 70s. She played with Jeff Beck and he was known for hiring the best musicians. As far as the ticket prices, I don’t think Rush needs the money so the prices might come down. I am glad they chose Anika Nilles, it will be fantastic for the fans who want to see Rush ❤❤
Can’t pronounce her name?
The kids don’t do it anymore? The YouTube is jampacked with kids playing instruments! And there has been for a good 15 years probably! I don’t know what you mean by that, that’s crazy. Do you even watch YouTube?????
I saw her incorporate the Roland SPD SX It’s like the octapad!
Tickets are not on sale yet so whoever’s posting the prices shouldn’t be doing that!
you should react to Pretend, a great math rock band
I loved watching you guys I am glad they picked her too and I believe they didn't want a Neil clone. I want to hear her play Distant Early Warning..
Im in.just hope Geddy does something about his voice
I think Annika THINKS she knows what she’s in for, but she definitely does not. That first Rush show in LA will make her jaw hit the floor… The passion, the noise, the regulars upfront air drumming with tears running down their cheeks… She’s going to be blown away.
Jeff Beck seen her on Youtube and got a hold of her for a jam session . then she joined his 2022 tour .
REHEARSE REHEARSE Like always the music will be tight.
