Guitar Tone Buzzwords Explained

Today I’m diving into guitar tone nerddom and exploring some semi famous maybe not so famous buzzwords that get kicked around on social media, forums, and summer festival jam sessions. I think together we can really find a way to nail down what they truly mean so that all guitarists can speak confidently when describing tonal anomalies. In the comments let me know what your favorite buzzword was and what you think about Weezer’s Everything Will Be Alright In The End!

  • I have a Harmonics Complex. I, persistently worry about what people might be thinking about my harmonics, or lack of.

  • Edge of breakup is a good one. Wet/dry/wet, TPS wet/dry, sparkling tone. I thought this was a new episode until Josh brought up covid.

  • i had to stop this video @ 1 min sir Josh! before ya tackle TRANSPARENT!= you should get straight/correct TONE first!? what is tone to you or whats it to us… just sayin!

  • I do seriously want to know if we are allowed to just roll off the time using the tone knob on our guitars still. It feels like I'm expected to buy a pedal for that.

  • The problem I have with "Boutique" pedals is they're overpriced and there's no guarantee the QC is up to par with companies like MXR, BOSS and EHX. A new pedal manufacturer selling Boutique pedals just doesn't have a reputation to uphold, so the QC is always questionable in my eyes.

  • With the "Haunting Mids" I feel like it's not that we Haunt the Mids, I think its more like the Mids Haunt us…

  • I’ve been sick all-week. Kidney-stones made pain-meds necessary and after 2-months of them, I’m dope-sick ???? Went 55-years without drugs, but dope-sick at 55 … fun!!

Anyway, watching these JHS videos have helped me to focus on something other than my misery. Thanks, Josh.

  • Say what you will about jhs and their pedals, it’s undeniable that Josh has the best shirts in the game

  • I love your sense of humor my man! lol. I've played since 1965 and I hear these terms tossed about that were nowhere around in those days. Only term we had was Groovy. Was it a Groovy sound or not. It was enough for us we all knew what it meant and what was being asked. When Eric Clapton put his foot down on a Wah pedal in Cream it was Groovy! You went to the Guitar store and told the clerk I want whatever it is that Clapton does in the song White Room that makes it sound so Groovy. The clerk knew what you meant and showed you Wah I'd like to see a return to a one word descriptive term that covers all the bases and get rid of all the 10,000 different terms they have now. I'm not impressed.

  • Never compress your sustain unless you are sustaining your compression, and vice versa. Maybe.

  • If you don't have tone plugged straight in your amp…., a pedal isn't going to help. The tone is in your hands.

  • Re: what you said at 8:19, I have a suggestion. I Want It All in a pedal would probably be the Digitech Brian May, right?

  • Guitar players use tons of words that have nothing to do with sound to describe sound ????
It always bugs me, even when I’m doing it myself

  • Instrumental music fan speaking a few genres and enjoyable tasty tid bits
    Laika and the cosmanauts (surfy)
    Joe Satriani (liquidy rock)
    Beethoven (heavy hitting piano)
    Skuli Sverrison (gorgious avant garde)
John Zorn (the answer for tasty world nuggets of fusion and class)

  • This was a great and educational video. You could probably make this a series as there are so many.

  • What about the buzzword "chewy'??! I heard Pete Thorn use that one when he was test-driving Steve Vai's Marshall Super Lead amp head, on loan from Dave Friedman, for a YouTube video. And Pete got Steve on video-chat to explain the history of the amp. Was pretty cool!
