John Cougar Can You Take It on HQ Vinyl with Lyrics in Description

Track 5 from his fifth album “American Fool” released in 1982 copyright Riva Records. It was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and Criteria Studios in Miami and was produced by John Mellencamp & Don Gehman who was also one of the three engineers who worked on the project. It was his breakthrough release and reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart where it stayed for nine weeks. Riva Records monitored the recording sessions and didn’t see much potential in the songs chosen for the album so they put a hold on the sessions and considered hiring a new producer or even firing John from the label. Eventually they were convinced to let the project go ahead but hoped for a different musical direction on future albums. Three singles were released. “Hurts So Good” reached No. 2 on the chart and has become one of his most popular songs. “Jack & Diane” spent four weeks at No. 1 and was selected by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the “Songs of the Century.” Mick Ronson, who worked as a guest musician and arranger on the album, was instrumental in coming up with the final arrangement for the song. The album received above average reviews and reached No. 37 in the U.K., No. 30 in Sweden, No. 18 in Australia and No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada. It was certified 5X Platinum in the U.S. and Canada. I was courtin’ a Southern belle
Her Daddy was a rich ‘un, too
Sports car outside of her door
She was pretty good lookin’ too

Call me up, want me to come over
When the servants are all in bed and she said
“Daddy’s on a flight tonight
Does that put any ideas in your head?” I say to her

(Take it all the way)
Can you really (take it all the way down?)
Can you really (take it all the way)
(Down, down, down?)
(Down, down, down?)

(So we watched a little TV)
(I drank up the family wine)
(She said, “You’re such a snake in the grass, boy)
(But tonight, you’re mine”)

Wait a minute, wait a minute, baby
Are you tryin’ to make a fool out of me?
She said (“I’ve seen men like you before)
(I got a long family tree”) and she said to me

(Take it all the way)
Can you really (take it all the way down?)
Can you really (take it all the way)
(Down, down, down?)

And I say to myself
Even a fool like me can be the lovin’ kind
Even a fool like me can be the lovin’, lovin’ kind

(Take it all the way)
Can you really (take it all the way down?)
Can you really (take it all the way)
(Down, down, down?)
(Take it all the way)
Can you really (take it all the way down?)
Can you really (take it) yeah (all the way)
Down, down, down?
