John Cougar Hand to Hold On To on HQ Vinyl with Lyrics in Description
Track 3 from his fifth album “American Fool” released in 1982 copyright Riva Records. It was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and Criteria Studios in Miami and was produced by John Mellencamp & Don Gehman who was also one of the three engineers who worked on the project. It was his breakthrough release and reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart where it stayed for nine weeks. Riva Records monitored the recording sessions and didn’t see much potential in the songs chosen for the album so they put a hold on the sessions and considered hiring a new producer or even firing John from the label. Eventually they were convinced to let the project go ahead but hoped for a different musical direction on future albums. Three singles were released. “Hurts So Good” reached No. 2 on the chart and has become one of his most popular songs. “Jack & Diane” spent four weeks at No. 1 and was selected by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the “Songs of the Century.” Mick Ronson, who worked as a guest musician and arranger on the album, was instrumental in coming up with the final arrangement for the song. The album received above average reviews and reached No. 37 in the U.K., No. 30 in Sweden, No. 18 in Australia and No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada. It was certified 5X Platinum in the U.S. and Canada. You can laugh and joke and make fun of your friends
Spin in the middle when the troubles begin
Take it nice and easy and always pretend
That you’re cool, so cool, so cool
Say I’m alone and I’m wild and I will not be tamed
Talk like a jerk or an educated brain
Be an old girl drivin’ the young boys insane
Be a joker, a preacher, it does not matter
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Don’t need to be no strong hand, don’t need to be no rich hand
Everyone just needs a hand to hold on to
Havin’ good luck with your financial situation
Play the ponies, be president of the United Nations
Go to work and be a Hollywood stud
Drive your four-wheel drive right into the mud ’cause
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Don’t need to be no strong hand, don’t need to be no rich hand
Everyone just needs a hand to hold on to
And in those hours when you’re alone
And there’s nobody there except yourself
I know it, you wanna pick up the phone
And say, “Talk to me, talk to me, somebody please talk to me” yeah
Oh-oh, yeah
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Don’t need to be no strong hand, don’t need to be no rich hand
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Don’t need to be no strong hand, don’t need to be no rich hand
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Everyone needs a hand to hold on to
Don’t need to be no strong hand, don’t need to be no rich hand
