John Cougar Jack & Diane on HQ Vinyl with Lyrics in Description
Track 2 from his fifth album “American Fool” released in 1982 copyright Riva Records. It was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Hollywood and Criteria Studios in Miami and was produced by John Mellencamp & Don Gehman who was also one of the three engineers who worked on the project. It was his breakthrough release and reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart where it stayed for nine weeks. Riva Records monitored the recording sessions and didn’t see much potential in the songs chosen for the album so they put a hold on the sessions and considered hiring a new producer or even firing John from the label. Eventually they were convinced to let the project go ahead but hoped for a different musical direction on future albums. Three singles were released. “Hurts So Good” reached No. 2 on the chart and has become one of his most popular songs. “Jack & Diane” spent four weeks at No. 1 and was selected by the Recording Industry Association of America as one of the “Songs of the Century.” Mick Ronson, who worked as a guest musician and arranger on the album, was instrumental in coming up with the final arrangement for the song. The album received above average reviews and reached No. 37 in the U.K., No. 30 in Sweden, No. 18 in Australia and No. 1 in the U.S. and Canada. It was certified 5X Platinum in the U.S. and Canada. Little ditty about Jack and Diane
Two American kids growin’ up in the heartland
Jackie goin’ be a football star
Diane’s debutante, backseat of Jackie’s car
Suckin’ on a chili dog outside the Tastee Freez
Diane’s sittin’ on Jackie’s lap, got his hands between her knees
Jackie say, hey, Diane, let’s run off behind the shade trees
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks, let me do what I please, say yeah
Oh, yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone, say
Oh, yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone, they walk on
Jackie sits back, collects his thoughts for the moment
Scratches his head and does his best James Dean
Well, me and they and Diane, we oughta run off to the city
Diane says, baby, you ain’t missin’ nothin’ and Jackie say
Oh, yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone
Oh, yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone
(Gonna let it rock, let it roll)
(Let the Bible Belt come and save my soul)
(Holdin’ on to sixteen as long as you can)
(Changes come around real soon make us women and men)
Oh, yeah, life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone
Oh, yeah, they say life goes on
Long after the thrill of livin’ is gone
A little ditty ’bout Jack and Diane
Two American kids doin’ best that they can
