Santos Martinez Allegro | Review

Sam Bell reviews the Santos Martinez Allegro Cutaway Electro-Classical Guitar. One of the purest, most expressive musical sounds is that of the traditional nylon string classical guitar, but great tones tend to come at high prices. Can this reasonably priced classical really live up to the competition?

  • As a follow up to my earlier comment. I went back to the shop and they had raised the action somewhat. Although it now didn't rattle so much, I found it a bit too hard to play – for not that much sensitivity in the sound. I also found that the 1st and 6th strings had a tendency to roll off the fingerboard, which is a bugbear of mine.
Those are the gripes, but overall I thought it was a rather attractive and interesting instrument. I doubt I'll buy it, but I would think it could be set up to be really nice.
    Good for the price.

  • I tried one of these [or something very much like it, it was the same make/look etc] in a local music shop a week or two ago.
I thought it was great – to start with; very low action and super-easy to play. It sounded really good both through the amp and acoustically.
As I played on, it came to light that the action was so low that various of the higher notes rattled, buzzed, choked out etc. It has a truss rod fitted, which may or may not be relevant.
I was interested in it, but not with so many faults. I may go back and see if they've sorted them out. It did seem like a potentially good guitar for the money [£350 I think…].
