I’m at it again, having fun with the First Class-ical FC522 by Journey Instruments. It’s a collapsible travel guitar with solid cedar top and solid pao ferro back with full gloss finish on body, and satin finish for the neck. Influenced by a traditional Torres shape and bracing for a fairly traditional sound. Usually travel guitars are small and not ideal for practicing but this one is pretty much full size which is fantastic (see my note below on scale length). It collapses into a great roller carry-on case with retractable aluminum handle – which has room for all your gear, perfect for flights. Overall great value for the price of $999 USD via their site. The mellow warm tone will be appreciated by most.

  • I want to thank you for the review on the FC522 and the OC520. I first got the FC522 but ended up returning it and getting the OC520. The OC520 is smaller and lighter and fits my needs as a travel practice guitar a whole lot more than the FC522. I actually like the sound of the OC520 better than the FC522. Your suggestion of getting the OC520 over the FC522 is spot on, I should have taken your advice from the start. ????Keep up the great work!

  • Thinking about getting one of these. I teach middle and high school band, and I’ve noticed that playing classical guitar a bit during my planning period is very calming. And I have a small car (Miata). Which guitar’s sound do you like more, this one or the smaller OC520? Any other advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  • Hello,
I’ve just bought the FC522 model nylon guitar.
I like the guitar but I noticed two things.

The first is that the body is higher/deeper in that part that goes on the thigh, is that normal and why?

The second is that I measured the lenght of the fretboard and it’s around 1,2 cm less than a standard.
This cause a problem on the intonation of the high notes, that are increasing in pitch.
Is it a defect of my instrument or are they all like this?

About the under-saddle pick-up system, is it possible to put a piezo under the bridge or could be a problem when I collapse the fretboard ?

  • Hi Bradford, Thank you for doing this review. I just bought this guitar as I need to be traveling again this year onwards. One possibly stupid question I have is: when storing this guitar, do I need to take the same care that I take with my regular guitars in terms of placing a humidifier in the case? Or is this guitar likely to be impervious to the vagaries of humidity? For example, my first-ever guitar, a Carmencita, never broke or warped over the years, and I suspect it was designed to hold up to humidity variation. My newer guitars are more expensive, and I keep a humidifier pack in their cases.

  • Any thoughts on the Moov guitars from Greece, or do you know of any better alternatives? Trying to pick one for long term nomading 🙂

  • Dear Mr. Werner,

I am considering buying a Journey classical travel guitar. Do you recommend the OC520 or the OC522. From you videos, the OC522 sounds a little better. I think the OC522 cost $999 and the OC520 costs $649. By the way, do you want me to mention that I learned about Journey Guitars from you?

Thank you very much for the review!

  • I love Travel Guitars…Never saw anything like that…nice. I have a Cordoba Mini, I've been meaning to do a video review on it…it has pros and cons. My favorite guitar is my 3/4 size "Martin" XLME, it's never in the case…it goes with me everywhere, Dr's office, bank, train…everywhere….it's steel strings but it plays Classical very well. I did a review on it years ago.
Thanks for the tip on this Collapsible Guitar.
    5 STARS!

  • There’s a luthier in Mexico, Gabriel Hernandez Jimenez who came up with a little more discreet design, I’d recommend you to check it out!
