I Play An 80 Year Old Guitar…How Does It Sound?
To find out more about the guitars in this video, reach out to Maple Street Guitars in Buckhead Georgia and ask for Lindsay.
It’s not every day you get to play an acoustic guitar that was built in 1943, and this war era Martin D-28 is the best sounding acoustic guitar I’ve ever played or heard. Not only that, but in this video I get to check out a number of other incredible vintage acoustic guitars from over 80 years ago.

Hell yeah there’s a reason all the legends had a D28
Got a Morris Carbon back with a serious front and top end in it, that would suit a stage performer … Ricky Scaggs style picker for $20K just PM me. It is the real deal stage presence-wise.
Sounds like a really dry old guitar
Just last week I traded my 1963 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 with a 1937 Gibson acoustic. Best deal of my life , even considering I had the 6120 for the past 55 years loaded with memories. :))))
What strings do you use? I have a 1936 Martin O18
That is just ridiculously good sounding!
What's the first Song played with that Martin?
What ever Martin did in '43 they may wanna start doing again…
I wish I had the ear to truly appreciate this guitar's sound. Sadly, it just sounds like every other acoustic guitar to me.
Petition for Rhett to reference the songs he's playing, se we can listen to them and learn them
I got a lefty G&L strat for my 50th birthday in Oct 2004 from MSG, it cost 1050.00 back then, those were the days of affordable guitars.
Dang Rhett! Killer playing. Reminded me of the way Dallas Green plays.
Wouldn't be flat picking something like that. Id be like fingerstyle only. The Hawaiian sounded nice but the neck shape. Like the L5 very clean example. The 43 Martin is sweet for sure.
I used to own a 1917 1-28. Spirits and ghosts came out of the fretboard.
Thanks Rhett!
Wonderful sounding acoustics….
I want to sell my collection and replace with all vintage now (it won’t happen, but I want to)
Wow!!! What strings did you put on a vintage guitar like that?
What is the song Rhett was playing at 4:08?
Thanks, Rhett. I own a 1932 Gibson L4 archtop and back, round hole like the one featured at the end. Was my father's and before him owned originally by a Wyoming cowboy named Normy, a family friend. My dad sent me off to college with it and I had Mario Martello of Lundberg's in Berkeley level and refret the neck. Plays gorgeously, loud and full, and and has gotten even better over the years. In 1978, Jon Lundberg had 5 L4's on the wall for $375-$450. Mario also scalloped the braces of a mid-60's Martin 0-18 that unfortunately was stolen from me. My 1925 all mahagony Martin 2-17 sounds a lot like that koa Martin you featured. Butes!
My grandfather bought this exact guitar, and it hangs on my wall to this day. It is truly a beautiful guitar.
So nice!
I just know what I like and your Taylor 110e sounds just about as good as any of these and way better than most. Lucky for me I'm not a museum curator so these relic guitars have zero appeal. I think you can do better with a newer instrument and get way more for what you pay. I think the 10 year old custom shop Les Paul you picked out with Tim Pierce would stack up against any Les Paul of any age or price and come out on top. With that I rest my case.
I don't think I've ever heard a nicer sounding acoustic.
imagine playing a zepplin riff on a guitar that was made beforer the riff was
You're a good man, Rhett.
Got to play a 1948 Martin… and while it was NOT what I was looking for… OMG. It was definitely probably the best sounding guitar I've ever heard! Keep thinking about it.
Would probably have to sell 3-4 guitars to purchase it… but wow. There is nothing like the sound coming out of these guitars. I wish it could easily be put into words, but it's an experience!
The old small Martins make so much sound. I have a 1926 Martin 2-17 — a really small guitar — and the amount of sound it makes is amazing.
The dreadnought shape doesn't agree with my shoulder and (unfortunately) my belly, but I'd deal with it for that sound. Just wonderful.
That D28 is stunning.
Just about to close a deal on a 44 Martin D-18 with scalloped bracing and Adirondack top. It doesn’t take a back seat to the D-28 here. Pure wartime magic. Cool video.
that Martin…. unreal man… unreal
Sounds like you both were playing some derivitive of Love – Alone Again Or
Great playing nd great tone/balance.. what strings were on the D28?
Please could someone tell me the song he plays on the 1929 Martin at the 09:00 mark? I recognise it. Sounds like maybe Led Zep??
How to make an acoustic sound better:
1. Play it.
2. Repeat for 50 years.
more videos like this!!!
It’s crazy how amazing these old guitars sound!! The new models of these sound good but don’t hold a candle to these vintage ones sound.
Great job capturing the shear awesomeness of these guitars. Need to start saving my pennies.
it's the l-century gibby for me bucket list guitar
One of the coolist presentation Rhett . Should have been titled – Guitars to die for if I had disposable income to buy .
Cheers 03/12/2022
Holy crap that first Martin sings
Super video, Rhett! Thank you!
Bea is an alternate spelling of Bo, pronounced "Bow." I know someone with that first name.
Notice the difference in how far the low E and high E, respectively, are from the sides of the fretboard up near the end of the board and/or beginning of the sound hole. From what I can see, the nut slot spacing relative to the fretboard is fine, and the string spacing at the bridge is good, so… I mean, you can even see that the fretboard runs slightly diagonally down the length of the low E string, whereas the high E doesn't exhibit nearly that much of it, so… I'm assuming it just had a poor neck rest at some point?
like a dumb question here .
are guitars from 90 now vintage?
i have tried a strat made in 1991
