  • It's SO hard for me to find the right chords that I'm "hearing". I'm only just getting really comfortable with recording software and I like this method of experimenting to find the right thing. Especially if I can offload the whole process from my working memory!

  • This is really cool and shows how different starting points can get different results. This sounded much more like a classical composition insofar as the melody dictated everything else about the production. Another gem of a video Andrew!

  • This is fascinating coming from a jazz background, because like, you almost make the choices i would make, but you just make the choice thats one over because you haven't necessarily completely familiarized yourself with convesion (like that II7 to ii7, it would be much more idiomatic to go the other way, especially if you were leading into a V7 chord

  • I definitely use that last method for improving my skills in song structure, producing, and mixing where I will pick an artist I like and try to make a song that sounds like they would have made it. It's a really fun little challenge and will often lead to moments about really figuring out why it sounds pleasing.

  • Great, man! Good for you on trying to improve and broaden your palette. Sometimes doing it by ear will only get you so far, so maybe really try to pick up a book to study and write some stuff down. Do a lot of transcriptions and getting chords down by ear gets easier and faster.

  • "Pretty rare for a chord to go from the major to the minor" not in jazz… Think four or tune up by Miles Davis or millions thousands of other!

  • Now I’m no expert, nor am I an advocate for negativity, but in what way was this jazz?

  • I just got myself to making music for my game… I'm bad at many things (making games mostly), but I'm best at being unable to make music. It's such a struggle. I'm now at about 96h into it and so far I can use DAW at master level and know basics of music theory, also know a little bit about song structure and fm synths. Still can't make anything remotely sounding like music even tho I can do some piano improvisation. I probably need some sleep but maaaan is music hard to learn…

  • Thanks for posting this Andrew. I agree with your 4 take limit for creating YouTube content. I think I may give that a try. I recently started using a pair of dice to help with selecting things like my key and any other criteria I always find myself taking hours to make decisions for.
