Jazz Guitar Exercise – Bebop Melodic Lines And 3-note Chords

The Chord Progression

The chord progression is simply a iim7 V7 sequence implying five different three-note chord voicings that are :

  • b7 – b3 – 5 (minor 7)
  • 5 – b7 – 3 (dominant 7)
  • 1 – 5 – b7 (minor 7)
  • b7 – 3 – 5 (dominant 7)
  • 3 – b7 – 1 (dominant 7)

Here are the guitar diagrams representing these chords.

X means that the key is not defined. These shapes being movable and playable anywhere on the guitar neck.

Notice that the chord progression follow a cycle of four measures.

The first four chords follow an ascending movement, then the same chords are transposed a semitone higher and follow a descending movement.
