Is The Line 6 POD Express Bass A Good Bass Rig?

The Line 6 POD Express Bass allows you to practice, record, and gig with a single device.

Jam along to tracks so you can nail rehearsal, connect it to your computer to use as an audio interface, and send it straight to the board at gigs.

And yes, you can absolutely gig with the Line 6 POD Express Bass. It boasts 21 onboard presets that you can access with the tap of a footswitch, and you can even add up to two external footswitches that can turn your desired effects on and off. Or, you can add a volume pedal AND a footswitch.

The versatility of the Line 6 POD Express Bass is impressive as-is, but what’s most impressive is the price.

It’s $179.99.

Similar tools either aren’t gig-friendly—the bulk of them being existing pretty squarely for the sole purpose of practice—or significantly more expensive.

Of course, the Line 6 POD Express Bass doesn’t have all the effects and signal chain flexibility of an HX Stomp or POD Go, but it’s a compact solution that’s ideal for everyone from newer bassists to experienced pros looking for the world’s most compact fly rig.

The Line 6 POD Express Bass was recorded direction into a Tascam Portacapture X8. The audio was uploaded directly into Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. The only post-production was gentle audio leveling.

You can also buy from Amazon if you’d like: https://amzn.to/435J14s (affiliate link) though I highly prefer Reverb.com.

  • Thanks for spending time and effort for doing this video and putting yourself out there. It’s helping me decide whether to buy. One knock (sorry) is your mention of “B Sheee-Han” suggests maybe you don’t know who he is. If that’s the case you must go learn about the bass master!

  • Well done, don't worry about some of the critics… its NOT about your playing, or style. IT iS about the product, which u went through fairly extensively.. iv seen 6 other demo's of this pedal, U, by far, have done the in-depth. Anderson's was their usual knob twiddling , with no prior product knowledge..
    Well Done

  • If Line 6 had added a Pitch Shifter to this I'd snap one up in an instant. However, without one, it can't replace my Zoom B1 Four, sadly.
(With a Pitch Shifter it would be the perfect fly rig in terms of form factor, ease of use, battery operation, availability dual outputs.)

  • I just received my express bass today. My only issue is that the presets are difficult to find using the footswitch. Basically, I can go from preset 1 through preset 21 but I don't see any visual confirmation that you actually locked in on the one you want. Just hoping you are counting footswitch clicks to go from preset to preset. Do you know of a better way? I am playing with it tomorrow but only using 4 presets using 1-4. I hate to think about what I would do if I needed a 5th preset and it was preset number 20. I'm sure I would lose count. Any ideas?

  • Actually you can have octave up. Play the octave higher, the low octave will track better also.

  • …and it lacks midi. sadly. what an omission, please dort give me no „its meant for beginners“. no midi sync makes the looper and delays useless in my rig. as a beginner midi didnt confuse me on the m5. product ceipplimg. sad.

  • Awesome demo ???????????????? this multi-effects pedal sounds pretty cool. The amp models sounded great. I personally like the grit, vintage, punch, and modern amp models. I like the distortion effects, but I am disappointed about the distortion model. I would have expected to be modeled after a high gained distortion effect like the mxr m80 bass d.i plus or a darkglass b3k microtubes. I also like the modulation effects. I personally like the chorus and flanger effects. The compressors sound nice and the synth effects sound fun. I normally don’t use synth effects live, but I would use it for experimental Recordings. Overall, this is a great multi-effects pedal.

  • Does Playing LINE 6 POD make anyone else really happy?
LINE 6 POD is quickly becoming my favorite pedal. It's just so beautiful and sexy. Practically free and the second you drop her on the board that chill ass mofo gives you a Rich Dark Gushing Robust tone.. And you also get this cute little 1/1 feedback response usually too harmless to be forgotten.
But more than that, the Line 6 Pod is just so positively alluring. It comes on the board like "do you want to cast a spell?" and I'm like "yeah Line 6 Pod i do want to cast a spell let's do this shit" and when she attacks she's like "SPELLS ARE FUN" and I'm like "yeah they are SO FUN." She doesn't say some bullshit macho shit like "I will destroy you" she's just like "nah spells are fun and voodoo spooky.” And she looks so happy. I mean this is an inanimate object that literally brought my guitar to life by magic. It understands it's life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just fucking loving it. I mean just look at her face she’s just so happy and cute as a button.
I am literally never sad when Line 6 Pod is on board. IDK if she's gonna ever make it into the pedal HOF or not, but for now she a super dope chill pedal.

  • Cool demo! I heard the boost and thought it sounded nice. Then you said ep booster, which I like to use to drive bass 🙂

  • Very nice review!

Stereo unbalanced outs pretty much tells me that bass is more of an afterthought. Clearly guitar was how they prioritized the features and then they figured they might as well make some money from bass players.

No bassists use stereo but if they had made the out balanced (or even put XLR) it would be a great solution for gigging. Being unbalanced forces you to use a DI. A bit of a missed opportunity.

  • Hey there, Emily.
    A quick question for you.
Do you know if the bypass on this pedal is a true bypass or buffered?

Nice review, by the way! Very thorough.

    Cheers!
