  • Listening on JBL 306s, I hear a difference in the low mids. The iconic has less 400-500hz which causes your ear to notice the 150 – 200 hz range. To me, that means a little less mud or thickness in a mix compared to the block or the III. Hearing it with a bass track and drums would let you know if that tone fits better or requires eq'ing.

  • Peavey, no contest. Has a ballsy and clear lower midrange the other two lack. Im also not fan of the fizz the other two have

  • Bock letter is the standard and doesnt sound as fizzy. Block letter then Iconic. If you have to budget, the Iconic is a great substitute for that sound.

  • Here I am, in 2024. Decided on Iconic because of 1. Price point. 2. Brighter sound 3. Additional features such as the 1/4 attenuation, the burn switch, and the noise gate. Sorry 5150 Iconic haters, but if Fluff would have taken a little more time to tweak the settings on the Iconic and made a blind-test, everyone would got fooled thinking it was the block letter one…

  • I swear they all sound close but that iconic sounds the best more like how i would dial it in(i dont know/care which one sounds better in a mix .

  • Gotta say I’ve owned each (5150, 5150 iii, 6505, 6505+, peavy 5150 block, and now icon. I’ve since sold all the others. I really like the icon and chose that to be my last one.

  • Man, these were all so similar. And so good. Amazing crazy gaine tones.

I know you can change the voice in the Iconic with the Burn switch. But yeah, they all sound on the same ballpark. Close enough to just be different shades of awesome.
Honestly can't tell which I like more. Or even if i like any one of them more… and not just… they're all good. Crushing, honestly.

  • I still prefer the peavey. Much more punchy mids. The other two are a bit more scooped sounding.

  • Does the James Brown XXX SOUND BETTER THAN THE KUSTOM DOUBLE CROSS JAMES BROWN AMP ????????????????????????

  • The main difference to my ears is compression. The Iconic does not sound neary as compressed as the other two. A little brighter for sure, but also a lot more open and airy, which I happen to prefer. I also thinks it's the most versatile.

  • From my experience (I have an original Peavey 5150 and I had the EVH 5150 III for about 5 years) I absolutely loved the Green and Blue Channels of the EVH but I found the Red channel completely unusable. The EQ curve of that channel was just absolute “yuck” in a live situation for me. It’s not even in the ballpark of what the Peavey sounds like in the room. I have only heard the Iconic at Sweetwater and it sounded better than the Red channel on the EVH 5150 III, and while I have been unable to do a side by side comparison of the Iconic and Peavey in the same room I feel confident I would stick with the Peavey.

  • Great test setup. For the life of me I still cannot understand why people put a pedal in front of high gain amps. It causes this cocked wah midrange. The tell tale sign is pinch the D and G strings together and you'll hear this QUaaa Quaaa sound as the midrange EQ is sent into the hyper Q filter sound. Anyway the Iconic has a much richer sound in this test

  • My favorite is the Iconic without the pedal. It has a very tight and modern tone while also being really close to how a guitar would sound in a final mix. The OG Peavey is my 2nd fav, while the III comes in 3rd. I do like all of them though. The only thing that I didn't care for was the III with the pedal turned on, that option didn't sound right to me. But overall each of the 3 are solid amps, can't go wrong with any. But factoring price, the Iconic has the advantage.

  • As for just listening to you play, I feel like the 5150 iconic sounds best in almost every situation. This leads me to believe that it unfortunately wouldn't cut through the mix as well as the others. One thing I have noticed in my long, uneventful rock and roll career is that, if it sounds great in the bedroom, it's not going to cut worth a s#!+ I just purchased the iconic after my Bugera T50 infinium crapped the bed at practice last week. Haven't used it at practice yet. I know the Bugera gets a ton of hate for its dirty channel, but it actually is amazing (AND LOUD!) in a live setting. Hopefully the iconic can do it for me. Thank you for the awesome video

  • Didn't expect this, the Iconic sounds best. Much more pleasing mids that will cut through the mix better. Also tighter low end. Amazing.

  • Ok so now I've officially seen 8-10 vids of the Iconic being compared to EVERY VERSION OF THE 5150 EVER MADE! I'm going to buy a icionic used for around $700! For the money, you just cant go wrong! I really hope the older Peavey's start to come down in price do to how dam good the icionic really is!

  • Are you using the regular OD channel or Burn in the Iconic? I could go just clean and OD on the Iconic and br happy forever butbtheyre on the same channel!!! I would pay all the moneys for the Iconic to be 3 channel!!

  • The maxon overdrive killed it. Too much fizz with that pedal. Sounded heaps better without the OD.

  • A lot of people are picking the Iconic, because it's got a more modern/bright sound kind of built in. But to me, if feels a lot more sterile than the Block or the III. Much more richness with those heads. I'd definitely pick either of them over the iconic for studio work, because I can EQ the signal going into the amp, EQ in the effects loop, and EQ the mics as needed. Shaping those into the more "modern bright" tone the Iconic gives out, will end up a richer/fuller yet still crisp product.

The iconic sounds better than I expected though! Looks like a great amp for a modern metal band, especially for live. And especially for tighter budgets. A worthy edition to the lineup! But I definitely don't like it more than the other two.
