BASS
Well OK, but you could have maybe mentioned Jimmy Johnson or Haslip, but I get it, there's always someone you forget whenever someone asks you who your favourite guitarist/ song-writer/ lead solo/ fingerstyle or whatever is.
The drums’ best friend
The bass player on "I Want You Back" was not James Jamerson. It was Wilton Felder of The Crusaders
It's all about that bass. Aside from my own brother who played bass (locally) for same years, you did mention several of my favorites, Chris Squire from Yes, John Deacon from Queen, Tom Hamilton from my all-time favorite band – Aerosmith, and of course, one of the most heard / least known bassists, Carol Kaye.
Where is Thundercat and Joe Dart broooo Rick?
Steve Harris……… perhaps?? ????
Tal Wilkenfeld ???
Verdine White – just look especially for the old stuff by Earth Wind & Fire from the 70s. Intricate bass lines, performed to perfection!
The late , great, Rinat Ibragimov. Super Musician and brilliant Double Bass player.
I'd like to hear your opinion on this, but to me all the cats in Deep Purple were virtuosos, especially when they pushed each other into the stratosphere on their album Machine Head, where Smoke on the Water was the sixth best song: drummer Ian Paice Picante Sauce, Keyboardist Jon Lord of the Rings, bassist Roger "not Danny" Glover, and guitarist Ritchie Blackmorecowbell. The vocalist, Ian Gillen, was also no slouch.
Mick Karn…Japan
Wrong, THE BASS GUITAR
Justin Chancellor
John Wetton
Glenn Hughes
Adam Clayton ?
What happened to Gene Simmons and Michael Anthony?

Interesting comment about '80's' bass playing. It seems to be in line with the 80's 'sound'. And IMHO the 80's were the least engaging decade for rock music, sound wise. Way too synthotized or digital, because all those sounds were being discovered at the time and being used because it 'sounded' innovative at the time. I remember talking to a session drummer in the 80's, and he mentioned that he used all of the tools at hand because they were enhancing the 'sound' and why wouldn't you? Well maybe at 'that' time, but I never subscribed to that theory. Anything that sounds too 'enhanced' doesn't sound great IMHO.
Meanwhile, Fieldy is in his own league
The cat that lives with me is named Bootsy colins.. also named Francis, after st Francis. Complements of the iconoclastic bastards club.
