Pedals And Effects: Juan&’s Dr. Octagon Tour Pedalboard

The hustle never stops! Currently I’m about to wrap up the first leg of the Spring/Summer Dr. Octagon tour! Playing with the homies Dan the Automator, DJ Qbert and of course, Kool Keith has been a blast. We’ve been bumping subs each every stop of the tour, and I wanted to show you guys how I’ve been doing that, night after night.

This video was shot by Juan Alderete, and Nick Reinhart; and edited by Scott Ward for Vato Negro Productions.

Juan Alderete – beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, bandmate and cat dad – has had the privilege of connecting with music lovers around the world through his remarkable talent as the bassist in Marilyn Manson, The Mars Volta, Big Sir, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon, Vato Negro, Halo Orbit and Racer X in addition to lending his bass lines to music by Lil Peep, Jonwayne, Juliette Lewis, B'z and many more. On January 13, 2020, Juan was involved in a bicycle accident that—despite wearing a helmet and protective gear—left him with a serious type of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) known as Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). He also suffered a fractured clavicle and spinal fracture.

And as many of you fellow musicians and artists understand, there is no paid time off or sick time for this type of work. The journey Juan and his family are about to embark on is a marathon, not a sprint; it is a long road and we want to be able to tap some of the best and most passionate medical professionals who are experts on TBI patients and their potential for recovery. Physical, occupational and cognitive therapies are just some of what we'll need to pay for in the coming weeks and months. In-patient care and therapy, special medical equipment and assistance are other expenses we anticipate in the longer term. And while we help Juan focus on recovering, he will not be able to work but of course the goal is to get him back to playing music, and talking pedals on Pedals and Effects with his partner in crime, Nick. Because the world needs Juan on bass just as much as Juan needs to play bass.

  • I've had the Meatbox for over 25 years but I've hardly used it because I'm afraid it'll melt my speakers.Juan has called it a P.A. wrecker to paraphrase him. What is the real scoop?

  • Hey Juan, I'm a big fan of your work and had a chance to meet you briefly at a Zavalas show in sf a few years back. I was curious as to what type of pedalboard you have? I am a big advocate of the two tier system, with the top tier extending all the way across like yours. I've built a couple boards and am about to build another which I will probably send pictures to pedals and effects when it's done. Thanks for all the inspiring music over the years and inventiveness with pedals and these demos!

  • Pretty legend you get to perform with Kool Keith, he's one my favorite performers from any genre. You have a vast collection of pedals/effects. You have to love what you do.

  • Waaaaay too worried about "getting sounds between songs". I also remember him being a pretty good bassist but I just don't see it when I watch these videos.

  • Awesome board. Also, what kinda board is that? Custom made? Selfmade? Very interested 🙂

  • u can get rid of the switch crackling by literally pushing them back and forth a bunch. It usually comes from dust building up in pots from lack of using the switch. killing it juan!
edit: oh wait you're already on tour lol

  • 7:45 Couldn't you just move the hummingbird before the Meatbox to get the result of having the subs somewhat chopped still? May not be as perfect that way but it's worth a shot?

…if you end up doing this I'll gladly settle for one of them Eruptors as a thank you 🙂
