The spruce top adds both volume and distinctness to tone. I have a 000-15SM with a matt finished mahogany top and it has a warmer more subdued tone.
I have never been a fan of the high gloss finish.
I’ve owned this guitar for 7 yrs now! I absolutely love it! But I love all my Martins! This one, my CEO -4R, my new SC-13 e (AWSOME!) my 000-28, my D-18 and my little 00-17.

Absoluty not agree with what you said… I buy this guitar first thing you need to change immediately the tuning mechanics peg… In fact Martin put tuning pegs very cheap and for the price of the guitar is just one scandal !, second thing the came with the wooden touch very dry etc etc…. but after you spend around 300$ more in upgrading is ok the sound is good…
why did Martin discontinue this model?
Great sound. For me the acid test would be how it stands up to a wide range of open tunings. Some guitars can't handle the transition.

Finally Just Played this Guitar and whoaa buddy, this guitar its unbelievable, rehearing this video I don't think it does justice for how it sounds. It is one hell of a guitar and I think I'm in love….

Same here. They do the 000-15 in an electro-acoustic version in the UK and I was planning on getting that, but the 000-17SM which I tried today has a beautiful sounds, plays like a classical, less twangy than the 15 IMO. But it's £400 more expensive…
I have my heart and soul set on this guitar. Was torn between this between the 00015SM. Played them both and a variety of other guitars today in store and nothing had the same warmth combined with bite in my ears. A total beauty to play.

I can't help but say this is not a true 17 series. It's a spruce top and the 17's were always mahogany. It's a step in between the 16 and 18's. Cool guitar, but misleading name.
The Martin site says the fingerboard is solid Morado. I like the name Bolivian Rosewood better! Morado sounds like a spanish boy band 🙂
It's only got a gloss top…nothing else is glossy..but if you don't like that yeah…
