Fannie Mae (Live, 1981) – No Treble

Rick Suchow just dropped another recording from a 1981 performance by Jaco Pastorius.

Here’s what Rick shared about this performance of “Fannie Mae”:

“A quick note to my confident horn-playing friends: if you’re feeling good about your improv chops on a 12-bar blues shuffle, check out Michael Brecker’s solo on this tune. You might want to revise your confidence level. Brecker goes first, promptly blows the doors off the place, and is then followed by Bob Mintzer, who smartly hangs on one or two notes for about a week as he plots his way forward. But like Breck, Bob’s also a master, and his solo is a brilliant response to what had just taken place before he jumped in.”

“The third solo is Jaco’s, and he’s intent on blowing in Hendrix-like fashion. My apologies for the lack of fidelity on this part, which resulted from a combination of my exhausted little Walkman and Jaco’s distortion dialed up to 11, but for those who weren’t there I can promise you it was freakin’ LOUD.”

We’re super grateful to Rick for sharing so much great stuff over the years!
