THIS “FENDER” IS SHAMELESS…

Guitar of the Day! Taking a quick look at my uncle’s former guitar, a 1984 Tokai “Goldstar Sound” AST-40. He picked it up as a replacement when his Fender was stolen, purely because it was cheap… not knowing that Tokai is actually one of the most highly-regarded “Japanese Lawsuit” brands.

  • $80. Piled high in boxes with an SRV sales poster. After that deal fell through he’d sign those posters, “I play Fender guitars”

  • Played a Tokai Tele in a Japanese vintage guitar shop, that thing played amazing

  • That's my first guitar. Tokai goldstar in red.
Went with my dad to the guitar shop looking for a fender stratocaster, and the shop owner said try this instead, a much better guitar he said.
So I came away with the Tokai, back in 84.

  • I was always grateful for knock offs, we can afford to play but it never stopped me from wanting and acquiring the authentic. Im hopeful there's no more suing

  • I have two Tokai Tst-56 strats that I've modded over the years (reissue Fender '70's necks, different bridge pickups, etc). Both mine are 2 piece Alder, center seamed, open book matched bodies, and they are less than 2 oz. Different in body weight.
The open book match (as opposed to the closed bookmatch) is very important and this era of Tokai strats (all that I've seen/had (6) have been this way. 'Closed book matched' isn't as resonant, yet MANY Fenders are this way.
The 10/56 type soft V neck carve is also near perfect. I have two sitting around needing refrets.
Also, those 'Final Prospec' tremolo bridges are a big part of it. The saddles and the block in particular are amazing ( got to be the type of steel used). Putting one of those bridges on any strat (I have several) automatically improves it ????

  • I have an early 80's Antares Strat copy. If I had $5 bucks for every time someone said, this shouldn't sound this good, or play this well, I could buy a real Fender!

  • There was a LOT of junk that came out of japan in the 70s and 80s. Most of those cheap guitars were made from substandard plywoods. Were some good, yes, but it wasn’t the majority until the mid to late 80s when the cheap stuff moved to S. Korea and Indonesia. Make sure you know what you’re looking at before buying any over the internet. I am seeing a lot of junk being sold on ebay and reverb with Japan being a selling point. Even 80s Fender Squires were made from plywood. The 80s were my era for hanging out in all the guitar shops. Good times!

  • I just want to tell you how impressed I am with how you’ve grown this channel and carved out what I think will end up being a very fruitful career as a guitar aficionado. Keep up the good work!!!

  • I've owned 3 Tokai Strats over the years and frankly they were all better than any fender Strat I've owned. Good enough for SRV, it's good enough for us mortaks!

  • Better than the one I bought out of the back of a van for £60, I haven’t done anything to it yet apart from new strings and it’s still going strong a year later
