Steve Morse and Andy West are legendary players. In addition to co-founding the Dixie Dregs together in Augusta, Georgia, in 1970, both virtuosos have colorful personal resumes.
Guitar giant Morse’s is more high-profile. He remains the leader of the Steve Morse Band, who opened the Dregs’s late April show at Nashville’s CMA Theater, where this Rundown was filmed, with 45 minutes of smart shred. He’s also been a member of Kansas and Deep Purple, as well as another instrumental powerhouse, Flying Colors.
Besides his tenure in the Dregs, West has recorded with Vinnie Moore, the Steve Morse Band, Paul Barrere, and Henry Kaiser, with whom he’s been a member of the Mistakes, Crazy Backwards Alphabet, and Five Time Surprise, which also includes Messthetics guitarist Anthony Pirog. (Full disclosure: I recorded a version of Steppenwolf’s “The Pusher” with Kaiser and West as part of Kaiser’s Moods & Modes of Halloween video quarterly in 2023.)
The Music City show was classic Dixie Dregs, with more than two hours of high-wire playing, all anchored by the bold melodies that mark their compositions. Joined by longtime Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein, violinist Allen Sloan, and keyboard player Steve Davidowski, the concert was an affirmation of Morse and West’s vitality and musical partnership after sharing stages for more than 50 years.
In the video, Steve and Andy explain their rigs in person and in detail.

Морс интеллектуален и в образе и в исполнительстве и в композиторстве!
I love the Dregs since their "Free Fall" Album. So happy they are still playing ❤
The idea of Morse releasing a new Dregs album is marvelous. And I'm glad to hear he's always working on stuff – which means he has a huge backlog of stuff.
Miss Steve in Deep Purple ????
I could listen to Steve & Andy talk shop all day.
The spacing on Andy’s bass sounds pretty similar to John Myung’s signature basses.
Steve is the GOAT. I've followed him and been influenced by him since "What if".
I will not be seeing them this is my favorite band of all time favorite players of all time but I’m just not interested I stop by his solo records after 1990 high tension wires there’s nothing he did after that including deep Purpl that even remotely got my interest sorry. But to see them at 70 year old going around the country and playing a few shows I’m not interested man this is just too much I’d rather this guy sit at home and write classical guitar pieces I’m so sick and tired of his rock ‘n’ roll fantasy BS man this guy has the most potential of any composer out there and he’s being limited to 3 quart rock with some great riffs involved but still it’s just not the Steve M that I remember
Love Dixie Dregs. Broad Street Strut baby!
Man I love Steve!!! Been listening to the Dixie Dregs for over 40 years! And still do to this day. When I listen to him it brings me back to those days when I was a kid learning to play. I love this dude! I met him at the Bottom Line here in NYC 44 years ago! Holy fuck I’m old! Steve said he was so busy he didn’t have time for anything even to just relax. I play nothing like him but he influenced me so much. I heard his wife was sick. I didn’t hear about it until now so if she passed like someone has said in these comments my heart goes out to him. ❤️????❤️????
I've Known Steve since 78 and have done many shows together over the years!!
One of the Nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to know .✌️????????????????
I never realized he was so short.
These Guys R a MUST listen for ANY Musician. Life Changing.
thanks Steve
He plays with the dixe chiks
I thought he used to play with deep purple imußt beistaken I'm old
Steve's rig has changed somewhat. He used to have just a short delay, a long delay, and a synth set to an orchestra patch, all modulated by volume pedals. The more you pushed on them, the longer the delay or the more prominent the synth became. Now Steve has a few other gimcracks like a compressor and that reverb box going.
When are you coming to the west coast Steve?
Just saw the Dregs tonight in Albany, NY, absolutely amazing! At a little venue called the Egg the sound in that place is incredible, only maybe 3-4 hundred people there.
Saw the show in CT last night. My God he's still kicking ass on all levels. I was expecting him to be slightly rusty with the wrist issues and being slightly beyond spring chicken age, but holy sweet baby Jesus…my friends, this dude does not quit! He played brilliantly as always, and everyone else was insane as well. Van Romaine was particularly off the charts. A true virtuoso on guitar and as a composer. Holy shit what a show!
Saw DD in Charlotte NC probably early 70s
Maybe 1975. At the Double Door Inn.
Fantastic!
Even after all the years. Younger musicians Steve can still hang.
A older slower Steve is still really good.
Better than most.
Of course the compositions. Nobody writes like the Dreggs.
Thanks for life long memories!
Finally, an Aria GSB-6000 in the wild! Too bad he didn't get to plug it in.
Either Steve is short or that guy is a giant.
I thought he quit Deep Purple due to physical issues but looks like he is still playing.
God bless Steve. Legend.
The Dixie Dregs and the Steve Morse Band are two of the most skilled groups of musicians ever assembled!!!! Steve, whose technical knowledge is impressive, and Andy are two of the best to ever play their instruments!
I saw the first show in Macon, Ga.
It was phenomenal!
I know this sounds strange, but he is just so "musical" in his approach. It's like he belongs in a symphony.
His trem picking is terrible
Steve is most well rounded player of all time
So's everyone knows, that there guitar is worth a fortune. For someone to own Steve's number 1? Are you kidding me? The Gentleman of Guitarists.
I love those dimarzios
Every guitarist take note about what he said about mid range
Michael Angelo batio has his own endorse string dampened but I bought it and it does not fit any of my guitars
Bought 5 packs of D’Addario once. Put them on 5 different style guitars. 3 of the guitars had a broken string within an hour playing. Sorry but I won’t but them again. 25 years Ernie Ball strings have never done that.
