Our 10 Favourite Guitar Amps – That Pedal Show

You can never have too many amps… but which ones do we love the most? Today it’s these, tomorrow it may be different!

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Glad tidings tone seekers! If you’re new to the channel, don’t worry, maybe it will make sense in time. If you’re not new then you will know that Dan and I love amps every bit as much as we love guitars. In fact we did a show a few weeks back covering every guitar in our possession as of July 2020. Cue a cacophony of calls to document our amps, to which we respond:
“Yay! But verily we cannot do them all, for we are old and they are heavy and a PITA to cram into a single filming session.”
Please note, these are OUR 10 fave amps that we have in our possession today, not the 10 Best Amps In The World Ever. That would be a different list!

Honourable mention. One brand we haven’t included here – the elephant in the room; the glaring exception – is Fender. Let it be said loud and clear that the guitar amp market would be nothing without Fender amps: they are the basis from which all rock’n’roll guitar tone was built. If we owned them, a Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, tweed Deluxe and tweed Bassman would be in the list. For reasons we can’t explain, we don’t own any of these amps. Maybe because they are the foundation from which our fancy pants boutique stuff is built. Hmmmm….

With that in mind, find ye here these 10 Favouritest Electronical Guitar Amplificators Of That Pedal Show. Today at least…

Enjoy the episode!

  • I have been using a Sovtek MIG-50 in the studio we're renting and I am blown away by it. It reinvigorated that thing I had when I was a kid and I heard an amp for the first time. Not much does that to me anymore. I think I need to get myself one.

  • Love ❤️ every one of those amps! The Mesa sounded kinda Larry Carlton. Love the Marshall, Hi Watt, Vox and Matchless.

  • I have never seen a good amp….come tho think about it …I have never played through an amp I thought was any different

  • I’ve seen pedal pairing guides, amp pairing guides, but no pedal and amp pairing guides. Would love to see some tips for paring overdrives and the amps best for them.

  • And Robben Ford plugs into his $299 Monoprice 1×12 15 watt combo and sounds just as good as all the other amps.

  • I think I've watched this episode like 5 times..already..
I come back to it, every once in a while.. It is one of my favourite ones.
The Two Rock sounds amazing.. And loved the Tone King.
    But that AC30…. Bloody hell…!

PS: and paired with a Twin Reverb… It's heaven.
I can't thank you enough for this. I really really like this channel…and this episode rocks. ????
    Kudos from Portugal

  • Whichever amp Slash played. I think folks who came of age in the 70s were lucky to have the music they grew up with readily available to recreate but if I'm not mistaken it's tricky to get the Appetite for Destruction tone without doing a mod or spending loads on limited edition models.

  • Hi guys, currently using a Vox AC15C2. Using the normal channel and relying on pedals for drive.
Looking to upgrade my amp but torn between the Victory Sheriff and a Friedman Runt or maybe Pink Tack. What would you recommend… Playing indie/Rock Covers

  • Great episode- my wallet is cowering in fear ????
What about favourite bedroom / living-room amps ?

I guess the tone king makes that list as does the mesa boogie thanks to the attenuation and power scaling?

  • That MESA is chewy greasy. The MESA and Vox or Matchless would sound good running together. If I could pick one though, it would be the Two-Rock…or the Matchless. And you're right, everything sounds better through a 4×12. I have a Lone Star. The best part about it, IMO, is the ten-watt tweed mode. I leave it there all the time. So it makes sense I'd like the Cali. There are a couple of things you can do to a Lone Star to make it better, BTW. Add a bias pot, for one. Stock MESA's are biased cold. Swap a couple of pots in channel two, for another.

  • It’s remarkable that the only time the tone leaves me a little wanting is when Mick uses the DGT… not even a top class amp can save that one ????

  • Just curious to how high off the floor the California tweed is and what you recommend for an amp stand? I recently bought the 2 twenty California tweed 1×12 combo and it is kinda dark sounding just sitting on the floor. Also, do you think with it only being 20 watts that it would work playing in a band live?
