Just got one, swapped the neck, refinished the original neck with satin CrystaLaq before attempting to resell (still languishing on classifieds,) completely swapped controls and pickups, original ceramic magnet pickups were awful, chrome on the bridge was bubbling and saddle height screws was bent, so required replacement w/AllParts vintage bridge. Essentially $270 US for a new body and pickguard so as you managed to, buying used is essential.
I have one of those and I also have a real Fender P bass. Even though the Fender cost triple what the Squier cost, the Squire sounds just as good and has more tone variability actually. The Fender feels better in the hand though. Probably the glossy neck. I've wanted a Fender guitar for over 30 years and I now finally have one. But a Squier is basically a Fender anyway, just Fenders way of making a Fender on a budget.
Hello Paul, I liked your very explanatory video and above all that you emphasize that there are very good instruments like the Squier that are worth it for their price, both to learn as it is or to perform at another level. In my case, I bought a Stingray 4HH StingRay for 430.00 + sent, which is really a hassle to tune and octave, it weighs a lot on me, instead I bought a Squier Affinity for 233.00 + sent and this Jazz Bass was super
Try Geezer Butler emg pj pickups. They’re amazing
I have a Squier Affinity Precision bass that I'm loving. I also have an Ibanez BTB776 bass and I think the Squier precision sounds better in my recordings. The Ibanez has uneven level of notes throughout the neck and the Precision has even tone throughout the whole bass.
I bought mine last weekend also from a local pawn shop. Like new with the protective film still on the scratch plate – £155 and worth every penny. Came in a nice black and maple finish.
This bass is nice, it was my first bass I had a regular P bass not an PJ bass but still I had own a Squier Affinity P Bass, way long time ago when I first started out playing the bass that bass became my workhorse.
8:50. Brilliant. Never heard of anyone chosing A PJ Bass to use the Jazz bridge pickup as a thumb rest!
I just found a Squire 20thanniversary P-Bass, which sounded hood, for $109. Got a red tortoiseshell pick guard, Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder and bad ass bridge. Love the sound.
The Squier Chinese and Indonesian made Affinity series are great basses and incredible value for money. The Strats and Teles I don’t like as the bodies are thinner.
Are the frets Sharp as you move up and down the neck?
I’m seriously thinking about buying this for my first bass guitar.
Just picked up a 2002 "New" Squier P-Bass, with a Levy's padded pro bag and a Behringer Thunderbird Bx108 amp for my Son…can't wait to see his eyes pop out! lol
I wish they made a left hand model.
I own over 20 basses, that little Squire PJ is now one of my favorite basses…I’ve recorded about 80% of my productions with it.
I thought I was the only one that liked cheap basses,
Damn wish i saw this before i got a p bass with one split pickup
I have an Affinity Squire P-Bass. Pretty happy with it, but the pickup is crap! Planning to swap it out with a better quality one soon.
I REALLY REGRET buying this guitar. It claims to be for beginners but the frets are too wide and the guitar is really heavy. Gives me a pain in my neck and shoulder. Also it has a TERRIBLE sound. The strings are really springy and the amp is echoey. I difinately dont think it's a good guitar, makes for very unenjoyable playing as no song I play on it sounds even similar like it did on my old guitar. I HATE IT and dont recommend it to anyone starting. Its also an over-rated brand.
Great review, Thanks for posting!! you just pushed me over the edge and I'm buying one this weekend, I found a sale for $200 USD. PS – HUGE Clash fan here as well, grew up listening to them. HOWEVER, I also love Eric Avery so I'm getting a black one :-))
I play guitar and ukulele but I've been wanting to play bass for ages
Did anyone start with this bass ? Was it a good choice ? Any bass recommandations to start with ? (considering I don't wanna spend over 200/300$)
A Precision bass is a must have. I will order one now. I already have a white Thunderbird so my Precision will be black ????
Hi Paul nice commentary.
You might already be aware that Tim Butler is known, on occassion, to rock lower priced / everyman basses.
In fact, saw the Psy Furs couple days ago and Tim played the entire show with that same bass in Race Car Red.
Might have been modded – but maybe not.
Steve
Great vid again,Paul,,I have a affinity,,,speckle silver with black scratch plate,,it is the fastest neck of all my basses,,30 odd basses ,,and the cheapest,,lol.
Hi, Paul: I bought a white Squier Affinity P-Bass just like yours at the beginning of February and I love it! Your review was really helpful. The intonation and action were nearly perfect right out of the box. The workmanship on these newer Squier products is quite remarkable. I did have to deal with some fret sprout due to the cold, dry weather here, but that only took about ten minutes with a sanding sponge and some painter's tape. For $259 CAD, this was a great buy! If I add a new set of pickups, and/or a high-mass bridge I'll still be well ahead. I've put flat-wound strings on it and it sounds like mellow thunder. Thanks again for your help, mate.
