The Yamaha THR5A has been designed to be the portable practice and home recording amp for the acoustic guitarist. Lightweight and compact, with a stylish retro looking design and easy to use layout, the THR5 houses two 8 centimetre speakers and kicks out 10 watts, that’s 5 watts per speaker in stereo, the perfect volume for home practice. There’s a single input for a guitar, so no microphone input on this one, and a mini jack auxiliary input, so you can make the most of the stereo speakers to play along with backing tracks from your phone or MP3 player.

Where the THR5A differs from most other acoustic amps is it’s clever onboard digital processing, something that Yamaha call Virtual Circuit Modelling. This means that as well as the direct signal from your guitar’s pickup, you can blend in a choice of 5 virtual microphone and amp simulations, which include models of condenser, dynamic and tube mics, adding a kinda professional recording studio sheen to your acoustic tone. On top of this, to enhance and shape your tone, there’s a wide range of studio grade effects including compression, modulations, delays and reverbs, and best of all, when connected to your computer via a USB cable, the amp acts as a basic stereo digital recording interface, allowing you to easily record great sounding guitar tracks without having to worry about mic’ing up your acoustic or using any external effects, and if you’re new to computer recording, the amp comes bundled with a simple version of Cubase recording software to get you started.

Other essential practice features include a built-in tuner and a headphone socket, plus you’ve got the option of powering the THR5A with AA batteries, so it can be used pretty much anywhere. So if you’re looking for a small, lightweight practice amp, that’s pretty affordable, easy to use and makes it really easy to record your acoustic guitar, go and check out the Yamaha THR5A.
