Very nice review, would like to see if it kills to much the sustain on pinch harmonics, i think its an issue with most of the NG in the market, and the guys reviewing noise gates don't adress
Wait so noise gates are buffer/compressors?!
Sounds like for high gain its another nnnnshhh sound every time it clamps
It looks like these are sold out everywhere, even on the Donner site? I got this a long while back, probably close to when it rolled out a few years ago?
The only thing I didn't like about it is that when you turn it off, it doesn't let your OD run through with any gain, its just a clean signal that goes through.
I was thinking of getting rid of it for dirt cheap since I'm doing an inventory clean out but since they're sold out everywhere, I'll hold on to it a bit longer.
better than silencer
Reviews have helped me in my decisions to buy or not buy a product, though I have not written much reviews for others…
I'm new to guitar.
Been practicing for the past 3 months and I owned a Donner Noise Killer mini pedal. It did its job but I noticed that the tighter the single knob was too the threshold, the closer I got to affecting the tone. Single knobs noise gates are quick inexpensive solutions but the Donner Soph Gate is a must buy.
It took some tweaking but the settings are where I need them. Doesn't destroy sustain but you have to find your sweet spot because not all gain pedals are the same. I own Ibanez Super Metal Mini, TC ELECTRONIC MOJO MOJO, and TC ELECTRONIC DARK MATTER. Sometimes I stack them and the gain noise is out of control but not with Soph Gate.
This gate is quiet. I mean quiet. You must go through it's effects loop to get the most of it but if you're not touching the strings and all pedals are on, you wouldn't know it. That's where the tweaking comes in, because once you touch the strings, you'll hear it… So play with the knobs till you get it right because when you do, this thing is fast and I mean lighting fast in stopping unwanted noise.
You can have your over drive or distortion pedal on, turn the Soph Gate off and you won't hear them plus if you turn the gate on, your gain is ready to kick in while you play. This thing is absolutely TRUE BYPASS.
Any who, I hope it helps.
I have in this order,
Guitar, compresor soph gate, loop : all my gain, then straight into the Joyo preamp house. There I use its effects loop for all my chorus, modulation, delay, and reverb.
I hope it helps you decide.
Check out Online reviews for knob description and how to play with the settings.
I've gotta agree with you about how good Donner pedals are. These affordable Chinese pedal companies are awesome. You can buy from Donner, Joyo and NU/X and get great effects for a fraction of the more well known brands.
This was the most comprehensive review in this product.
Thank you.
Very much curious how this thing compares to the TC electronic Sentry. I'm considering both of these noise gates to upgrade from my Behringer.
Really appreciate this review. I saw maybe two other videos on it, bought the pedal, and had a few issues off the bat. For starters, it definitely wasn't friendly to being powered by my voodoo labs, but when I powered it with just a single DC cable, it works like a charm. Weird. That said, the control knobs are a bit more confusing than your typical one knob gate that everyone is probably used to. So explaining these really helps those skeptical on buying it. When you get it dialed in just right, it's an amazing pedal, really. It's lightning fast and has huge potential for metal players. Thanks again for this review! ????
Great with 60 cycle hum
