The Guitar Fretboard’s Mind-Blowing Mathematics

The guitar fretboard is filled with secret patterns … that are hiding in plain sight. In this video, I show you how to uncover them so you can master the instrument.

And … you’ll see how the guitar offers a glimpse into the higher dimensions. (For real.)

  • I feel like he’s talking to hear himself speak.

Useless information. Melody is the fundamental basis for all music. Understand that and you will understand all music.

  • Wooooooooowwwwwww!!!!!!!!!! ❤ mind blown!!! Thank you! So are guitar virtuosos just really good at math ad spatial visualization?

  • Learning guitar, and also being into color painting, I found your videos very interesting. Thanks a lot this make a lot of s'e'nse and is definitely useful.
This is also a ,very rare, case wher "mind-blowing in a YT video is not a cheap click bait.

  • On my umteenth viewing of this and still learning more.

Now I can alter some basic chords and get a sound i anticipate.

I'm on the road to improvisation.

  • Mike, did you figure the green for 528 Hz and the red for 740 Hz for the tritones? Brilliant.

  • Having trouble? Break this video down.
Stop at 5:28 and figure out the tritones. Etc.
There is a lot of information here. Unless you are advanced, it's going to take time and effort to get it. ????????????

  • A string is a chromatic scale, East and West.
A fret is a segment of the circle if fifths, North & South.
    Wow.

  • This is the best video on music Theory on Youtube. I don't know what these negative comments are on about. This is profound.

  • ok i was so lost for a second so in case anyone is stoopid like me the fret board in this is oriented how a guitar is not like straight up and down lmao

  • Yes. This info, lots of other info, and thousands of hours of hands on practice MIGHT get you there. Without the thousands of hours of practice this is just a comedy vid. There are no shortcuts to greatness in anything.

  • I memorize the fretboard like this, except I do it a bit simpler. I only keep track of root, third and fifths and figure out the rest on the fly. And I find the root with the circle of fifths.

  • Bro.. ????????????????
You win the best fretboard theory video I have ever seen. Its been 36 years of picking random covers out by ear.. I’m turning myself into a music theory, geek to figure it out. Now I love music theory, the traditional method, or the active listening method, I have never thought to related to a Taurus, my mind is blown.

  • The torus by the way is the geometric representation of space-time, aka the dimension we exist in. The hyperboloid is the exact opposite of a torus, and represents creation, or the center of all potential. It's the opposite of space-time where there is no existence, and no change. Rest. This is the dimension where new music comes from. Once it is played, it becomes actualized and this process takes place within the torus.

  • but it's annoying that the standard tunning kind of break this rule by shifting the second string from C to B????

  • I’m an engineer(electrical) by degree so the math part all makes sense. But my struggle in the past has been approaching the guitar like a mathematical tool. Not only does it force me to slow down to think (way too much) about what is going on, but it causes me to constantly review the fretboard patterns to make sure I’ve got the math right. Although I think this information is useful from a theory perspective, for me it would kill the pleasure and my skill in playing guitar. As one guitarist said to me, you can think the music or you can feel the music. When I get on my bike it’s total feel, as it should be. Now I have to retrain my mind (from years of abuse as an engineer) to begin feeling the music again. Thanks Mike George for this information as I found it fascinating.

  • I've watched this multiple times but still cannot imagine seeing these patterns. It feels as though I am missing some key understanding in order to truly grasp this. Do I just need to watch it another 20 or 30… or 100 times? ????

  • Nobody on YT has better diagrams than you.
Yes, this math is “mind blowing”.
I’d like to hear about peoples’ use(s) of these visualizations.
One use is to quickly locate intervals (the distance between notes in a scale). For example: G is the 5th of a C scale and 7 frets away.
How fellow-YouTuber, is this perspective useful to you?? Plz be specific).
Thank you for a fascinating video. I’m a subscriber.

  • My goal is to (“instantly”) name any note on any fret on any string (there are 72 (12×6)). I think this is an INVALUABLE skill. When soloing or sight reading, one can’t pause. I’ve long been able to do this on all 6 strings, frets 1-5. But on the 8th fret of the G string, I can’t tell you “Eb” instantly. This is a liability.
