When You Use Overdrive on a Jazz Gig
Sometimes you just have to do it. I love playing clean on these gigs but, I miss the sustain that drive gives you. For anyone interested, I used my NuVo Waghorn Guitar a GT-1000 for the Drive and a Roland Blues cube on this gig. Aug 2021 Soho London Dean Street Jazz club.
All the best guys and enjoy the rest of the weekend whatever you’re up to.

Sorry for the very late comment but what kind of OD did you use? I have a helix and I'm trying to decide between a klon or an ocd set to low settings.
Where is the basists
Awesome!
Hey man, great riffs, drive and execution. Sad the first 8 bars are missing in this clip.
Nice the touch the extra 2 | Gb/Ab | bars, is that what came up in the jam or was it written?
When you use overdrive in a jazz gig – yeah… Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Hallen (rip) and Michael Lee Firkins haver Ben doing this for how long?
Overdrive is the new Black… goes with everything!
Uh ohh…who needs a sax player!
Jazz licks on guitar always sound better with distortion. It’s more like a sax or trumpet. Same thing with acoustic piano vs synthesisers
Damn that ending to the solo! Incredible stuff!
Kind of … but I did notice that one of those hemidemisemiquavers that you played in the middle there ..was I bit shorter than all the others…
Shaking my head…
A rookie mistake there …try to give each note its full length…
..ahh ..you'll get there eventually..
I love the Roland Blues Cube sound.
I'm sure there was a guy holding a long, golden bendy thing that he kept trying to lick, f**k knows what that was.
You did kinda jump up in the Mix!????????
Wow ! Man you are free !
i respect you Alex!
The sax player was trying so hard not to project his eye rolls too much. 😀
Nice solo!
Hey that sounded great!
…you were in London and I missed the show?! What band was this and do you post your tour/gig dates anywhere in advance? And it's a big, saturated 'yes' to drive on a jazz gig!
I curse you for ending that song too soon Mr Hutchings
Thanks for the daily dose of inspiration, Alex. As a jazz student and at the same time shred enthusiast, I dig your style so much!
Jazz players need overdrive pedals to allow the rock to escape from their bones occasionally
Amazing! but it doesn't sound right. Leave the OD off.
Very nice, and the drummer has a great sound!
You need a doctor!
The sax player cant wait ????????????????
WHY NOT?
I love that you dont give af and play what you like. good stuff
Total bad ass. 100% Boss!
You're fired! Tasteful use
Will you be playing Pizza Express Jazz again any time soon Alex, or anywhere else in London? I was there last week watching Chris Potter, gutted missed you there in August!
Awesome energy Alex.????
EPIC!!!
Regardless of how you feel about the use of overdrive on a jazz gig, this is top, top playing. I hate to band the ‘v’ word ‘virtuoso’ around, but it literally means ‘someone that can play pretty much anything’. I think this guy falls into that very narrow category of musical exceptionality
Yeah, great solo. Not only overdrive, also posing as a rockstar! ???????????????????? blessings!
Oh man Alex I would love to hear you and Jimmy Herring tearing it up together????????????????
Sounding like a GOAT as always.
Fantastic tone as always Alex ????
???? Cot damn. What a fucking clinic. ????????
"Shwing" – if a guitar player tries hard to conceal the inner shredder while swinging the changes… simultaneously!! ???? Cheers Alex!!
Brilliant playing 0:34 sounds like my favorite Allan Holdsworh's lick
Sickkkk
Awesome playing that jazz. Sounds really incredible
Great work Alex! As alwayz????????????????????cheers Dana
Nice!
You're smoking that Jazz joint Alex
Brilliant playing Alex – you're taking up where Shaun Baxter led.
Wonderful Playing! 🙂
Amazing! Lucky people who were there. I miss England by the way, spent there some of the best years of my life.
It's a thing of great beauty. 🙂
