Geddy Lee’s tone – Jazz Bass X Rickenbacker [Limelight cover]
Instagram: @osmar.0liveira
There’s a lot of discussion about which bass Geddy used on Limelight tune from Moving Pictures. So which one do you think is the best to achieve Geddy Lee’s bass tone? Both basses were recorded using the same presets and favoring the neck pickup.
Basses:
– Lakland 44-94 in jazz bass style (bridge pickup in single coil mode).
– Rickenbacker 4001 (1974).
Audio signal (2 tracks)
– Drive channel: OVNIfx Smoothie compressor – Lehle Basswitch Sonic Spark – Sansamp Paradriver
– Clean channel: OVNIfx Smoothie compressor – Lehle Basswitch Sonic Spark – Sansamp VTBass DI

It was the Jazz Bass, the neck pickup on the Jazz Bass is very distinctive almost P-Bass like. The Rickenbacker is much warmer on the neck pickup the the Jazz Bass. The Rickenbacker on the album was only used on Red Barchetta and The Camera Eye and the tone is very different from the Jazz Bass.
I'm a massive Rush fan (for 40 years) and have both a MiM GL Jazz bass (fitted with Fender Custom Shop pickups which are a big improvement over stock) and a Rickenbacker 4003 – the fact that Rush fans, bass players, and bass players who are Rush fans still can't decide which bass is which on various tracks just tells me how unimportant it really is when the bass isn't the only instrument playing. Also, you can get a Rick and a Jazz bass to sound remarkably similar even when there isn't anything else playing to obscure or confuse which bass is which. So, in conclusion – great video!
Your getting a lot of digital distortion because you have too much mids and you need to play harder, using some heavy compression with minimal attack and high ratio can also really give you that aggressive sound if you play fast
Everyone's in a hurry to sound like everyone else!! Be confident enough to find YOUR OWN SOUND!
Honestly you dont even nail geddys tone. I can tell your plucking attack is fairly light. Geddy abuses those strings with his right hand. He puts those muscles to work and nails those strings and you can hear it on all of their albums. You can hear the strings hitting the pickups, frets… you pluck so light that although it does have the underlying natural tone of the instruments, it doesnt have HIS tone because you dont pluck nearly as aggressively as he does. Just wanted to point that out. Its a clear difference.
I think I heard this song at the supermarket the other day…lol.
Rickenbacker is the best!
Jazz and he did not have that hair bungee on his bass.
you do not play hard enough
You aren't plucking hard enough and there's too much distortion. Nice basses though.
Kudos to you for learning this song. Get a Ric…………………
Rick>>>>>>>>>>
Sou fã do RB
Both of the basses sound awesome
That's one very shitty MIDI file.
Both of them are dialed in absolutely perfect for that raunchy Geddy tone. I am always in favor of a Ric, but that is actually one of the nicest sounding J-basses (always loved Lakeland). The real magic is in Your right hand technique, its almost identical to how Geddy plays seriously sweet cover. Keep rocking!
How did you record that???? Both sound great, but the Lakland has the moving pictures sound by a hair. What ppreamp did you use? what was the chain of effects??!
They both sound like crap!
The Jazz Bass is definitely closer.
Listened to this without watching it till the best sounding bass was played, then I looked at the screen. Ric had that growly tone that sounded the best in this song. Maybe cuz I'm used to Geddy playing it that way. Rickenbackers are quirky sob's but they do have a distinct sound that stands out.
I have the rick, getting the lakland next
the Rick! it has that magic bright clang tone… Cool video. Good job!
fala osmar! parabéns pelo timbre. estou querendo comprar um rick. o corpo dele não tem aquele contorno tradicional. fica desconfortável tocar? abraços
