Acoustic Titans: Martin & Taylor Guitars | What’s The Difference?

Martin Guitars and Taylor make equally amazing instruments but with a very different approach.
How do they compare and is there even a “Martin sound” and a “Taylor sound”?
Let’s find it out with Kris in today’s video. Leave a comment below!

  • For me it’s all about the neck on both guitars. They both sound amazing when I play either, but the Taylor feels way better in my hand.

  • Well, it’s always a matter of personal taste. I’m much older now, been playing for almost 70 years, a great deal of that time professionally. I’ve either owned or played most of the quality guitars out there. I’ve had Martin, Gibson, Guild, Taylor, Alvarez Yairi, McPherson, Yamaha red label and various other acoustics – all different feel and sound different. How I chose a guitar, and I would suggest that each of you try it my way – I would pick up a new guitar, feel it and play it. If you just can’t put it down and want to keep playing, buy it, you may never get the chance again. The brand name is of no consequence, if you love it, buy it.

  • Both are amazing, but I became a Taylor guy early when I started playing, so everything will always have to compare to that. I started with the 1995 712 Grand Concert as my first real guitar and I still own it today almost 30 years later (I bought it used when it was 1.5yrs old). Recently, though, I’ve had a 914ce Chris Proctor signature that was amazing for finger picking, but I missed the smaller neck, as this one was huge, so I traded it for a 2005 914ce, which has been my dream guitar for 30 years, and I have to say, it does not disappoint. The only guitars I’ve played that compare are custom built and cost $7-8k and up to start. I’ll be a Taylor guy for the rest of my days.

  • I prefer the typical Martin sound to the typical Taylor sound, but that doesn’t make Martin better … just different. In the same way that I prefer Black Cherry to Rocky Road, but that doesn’t make Black Cherry better. Play whatever speaks to you.

  • I own(ed) many Taylor and Martin guitars and my main acoustic guitar for performing is my Taylor. It’s easy to play and sounds great plugged in and unplugged. I find new Martin guitars a bit tough on my hands and can’t even begin to play with the same accuracy and projection, as I canon my Taylor guitars. Nice clip mate.

  • Unpopular opinion, but I can tell you from personal experience. A Yamaha FG830, at $350, has an amazingly crisp, deep tone that rivals a Martin. I’m not partial to either brand, but in a blind test I did between an FG830 and a D28, they sound very similar.

  • Modern sound, lol( songs can be modern and old ); sound systems factor in is what make them ‘old or whatever’

  • I own several high end models of both. Ultimately, the Taylor PS24ce 50th master grade koa takes a dump on any Martins ive ever seen or played or owned, and that’s including getting a chance to play the ridiculously overpriced D200…. And in every aspect: tonal range and dynamics, aesthetic appearance, playability, construction quality, perfect intonation up all 20 frets, no binding or bracing or warping issues….EVER. The list goes on. There’s no comparison to me.
