Let me know in the comments which you would choose!

  • This video was really interesting to me as I own both a squire P classic vibe and a SX P-bass and a friend of mine owns a tallman 100 as well as the short scale version and I tried both of them. My favourite is actually the SX P mine has a better tone than my Squier and a better finnish to me. I have a very hard attack on the bass and the squier sometimes distorts my notes when picking too hard where as the sx still sounds clean enough. Last I wanted to mention the finnish, the SX plays so much nicer than my Squier, I remember in the rehearsal space on summer days without airconditioning that my I would would lose grip on the neck easyer with sweaty hands but i don't lose grip on the sx even with sweaty hands. Now I use the SX P as my main bass and the Squier was eating dust but now I put flatwound strings on that one so I can have a vintage tone if I would need one, That's better than eating dust like it was before. Last but not least I don't dislike the squier p in any way! It's my first ever bass and I learned to play the instrument on that bass so it holds a sentimental value to me. I didn't mention the tb yet because I didn't like it! the tone was too thing and the neck dive was too bad for me and it's worse with the short scale version. Now I know that this doesn't have much relivance to this video or my comment but I like to mention it anyway that I now use the SX P as my main bass tuned to E in my coverband and Eb in my alt rock band as well as a Squier Jaguar short scale with PJ pickups tuned to DGDG for my coverband and C# standard for my alt rock band. I'd love to try a SX SBA2PH because I still want a vintage p bass and love the SX P so i'd like to give it a try. Hope you can get your hands on one and make a review out of it, keep up the good work Jonny!

  • 16:30 Mate, I was offered a deal from a guy in the Norwich CashConverters – a small Aria practice amplifier and a Squier 60s Vibe Jazz in white with the tortoiseshell plate. I have never known anyone who sees it, have a negative opinion on it. Got the pairing for £150 second hand & this was around 2015, but no regrets.
I gave the amp to my daughter but that bass is going nowhere!! Okay its not a Fender but damn it, she looks good hanging on the wall in my hallway with my Warwick Corvette & Ibanez SR300EB. I really need to get my other two up somewhere.
Honestly, a 60s Vibe Jazz Squier wiĺl make you wonder how you managed before you owned it….

  • Bought a SX (second hand for 80eur) for rehearsals and let the bass in the rehearsal space.

Sanded the neck because it was sticky of the gloss finish.
The pick-guard consists of a shiny top foil which started to peel of. Underneath is a nice matt pick-guard.

The pick-ups sound harsh but not bad. In rehearsals the pick-ups picked up a lot of background noise so I replaced them with SD Quarter pounders (second hand 85eur).
Tuners are ok. Sensitive but stays in tune. Bridge is ok. Maybe I will change them, maybe not.

Because of the matt pick-guard I sanded the whole body with 1200 grit sandpaper (maybe it was smarter to use face mask because it is epoxy I think).

Now its starting to look badass ????
It is a good bass but you’ll need to work on it. I’m thinking about to use it for gigs ????

  • The Ibanez Talman PJ is a bit more mellow, but a lot more versatile with active EQ boost/cut for highs and lows and of course me a master volume and balance. It’s great for a wide variety of styles. I’ve used it mostly for rock, metal, and punk, but it works for a lot more… I will say it has a bit less sustain than the others

  • Giving P basses a score out of 10 for Versatility is like rating field artillery guns for Subtlety.

  • That's odd, I love jazzes, always had Ps, then a month ago I found myself playing my Ps all the time, the sound is just so right, no faffing, it's just the sound I've been seeking as is. ????

  • Yo Jonny. I agree with your comments. I think the SX tone is warmer. Squier is a bit punchier. Isn't the Ibanez an active bass? That would certainly put it in a different category. You put a lot of detail in this video. Good on you mate!

  • I had an SX P Bass about 15 years ago. It was surprisingly great for $200 CAD. Kind of surprised you said the SX sounded like the Squier except for being muddier. What I heard was that it was throatier/ beefier. Sounded like the pickup was hotter, and had more midrange and bass frequencies. Squier sounded kind of weak in the low end and midrange, which are what the classic P Bass tone is all about.

  • Good comparison video. Have you ever checked out the Aria Pro II Jet B bass? It's a 32" scale offset body with J pups it looks interesting at $349. They also have a model STB-PB which is a P bass version with a 34" scale at $299.

  • I like the Talman more. It's versatile, it has a sexy shape, and I like the tone. It's all a matter of personal taste though.

  • Interesting, the Ibanez P almost has a bit of a thunderous Gibson EB-0 humbucker tone.

  • Hi Jonny.
I have an SX FPB-62, and I'm thinking to change the pickup. I'm looking for something cheap but with good sound, and I'm considering a Wilkinson WPB, a Warman Classic PB and a Roswell QPA.
¿Any suggestion? ¿Would this change improve the sound or with the stock pickup is just enough?
    Thanks!

  • I play a SX Preci copy. Maple fingerboard. Seymour Duncan PU, flatwound strings. Every note is full of the sound of soul, Motown, rock'n"roll.
A lot better as my original fender Preci I played in the 80 ties.
Besides, last year found a SX sting ray copy. Same quality as the Preci.
I also play a Squire Tele and a Squire Esquire. Both very good instruments for very friendly price.

  • I purchased an sx p bass from a porn shop with the intention of taking the neck for a project. After taking it home and plugging it in I immediately decided to keep it. I get that it is a bit darker sounding than the squire but I think it really does that original 50's/60s sound that we hear so often on recordings so well.

  • I own a Squire PJ, an older SX Jazz Bass, and a TMB 100. I love all three, but the SX is far and away the best built, and the finish detail is impeccable! Both the Squire and the Ibanez needed fret work, but the SX was finished as well as my old American Fender.
The neck profile on the Squire is pretty close to a Jazz Bass neck, and is incredibly fast and smooth. The SX neck is more like a modern P Bass, but still very nice. The Ibanez is very good as well, but it is really unlike the others.
As far as tone goes, they are all very unique, but very well voiced.
If I had to choose just one, I would be very hard pressed to make a decision… But, honestly, my SX is just so freaking beautiful!

I'm very happy that I don't have to worry about making a choice between the three!

  • It would be interesting to see how the Cort GB54p Stands between these. Cort has been producing some outstanding gear for very low prices.

  • I have an old American made peavey fury with seymore duncan quarter pounders definitely the best p bass I've ever played and I got it for a steal on my local Craigslist because it looks beat up.
