  • I really like listening to your reactions. First because you limit your pauses during the first pass and I can enjoy seeing your facial and emotional reactions. Second, you have a pleasant and easy voice to listen to and you explain like a very patient teacher. I used to just listen to Geoff and VoicePlay for the overall sound and feeling of the songs but you have me noticing nuances now. It's really nice and I need to send you another hot chocolate. Hahaha

  • I remember the BW version. I must have listened to it a zillion times on the radio. Seems like it came out in the summer. It was almost hypnotic. I Know, I Know…..

Geoff’s voice just vibrates in my ear. Tremendous talent. Bass voices just hit different. I don’t particularly care if they go into the basement (my technical term for a low note) but I love the richness of their tone. Avi does that for me as well. Peter Barber is another enjoyable bass.

The difference for me in the original version is tone and emotional impact. I feel the sadness more in the original. More of a mournful sound that permeates the heart. Geoff’s is more of an experiment in sound. I don’t feel his sadness. Good version but different in impact for me.

Excellent analysis as usual. ???? Laughed at your “old” comment. I was 17 when this came out. Not sure how I transformed into 70 so quickly but here I am. I can say (we’ll sort of stole it) I’m well aware of that my youth has been spent, my get up and go has got up and went. But, in spite of it all, I’m able to grin, when I think of all the grand places my getup has been! Have a lovely day, Sir! ????

  • Sir, you have not yet reacted to the best piece of this concert, an anthology "Je t'aime", a real communion with his audience ???? By the way, you will notice that Lara always knows how to surround herself with excellent musicians

  • Geoff has trouble calling himself a bass because he isn’t “loud” like Tim Faust and other obvious booming basses, but we all know that he’s definitely a bass. With a fantastic range that many basses can’t claim. He’s more the rumbling thunder that keeps vibrating the bones, vs the booming thunder that makes you jump, but quickly fades away.

  • I LOVE Geoff. Having said that, this is probably my least favorite magical Geoff remake. I never cared for the song when it was first introduced (yes, I was in my teens, and I remember it). I STILL don't care for it, but Geoff DID manage to make it palatable. The harmonies he pulls off are amazing, as usual. Your analysis was more enjoyable than the song, to be honest.

  • The opening to "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" uses a similar intro to the one in this video. This video was shot at an historic Florida home called "Casa Feliz". At some point the city or Orlando was going to knock it down, but, as Geoff put it, "some kind hearted do-gooders raised some funds to have the home lifted off of it's foundations and moved to a new permanent location."
Geoff has also described the video as, "Geoff walks around an empty house singing to himself like a psychopath, oblivious to the amount of sunshine pouring through the windows." Also, he says "I know" 38 times.

  • I love Geoff's cover of this song. Which I honestly think is hilarious, since I am not fond of the original. Bill Withers' voice is wonderful, but I dislike the song and the "story" of the song. The running joke for Geoff's version is that this is Geoff if Kathy goes grocery shopping. ????

  • Thank you for adding your endorsement to Peter Barber's, that Geoff is a natural bass. I sometimes think he still imagines himself back at school, struggling to hit a C2. Always love your commentary and analysis. Happy 2025!

  • Another terrific reaction. I actually met Bill Withers—didn’t know who he was at the time, which amused him. He was very kind to me. A few weeks later I saw him on TV performing “Lean On Me” and realized I knew and loved his music— it was a head-smack moment. LOL. Anyway, I think this is a great tribute. Your analyses are always so good!

And yes—all you have to do is hear Geoff talk. Despite his beautiful timbre in the baritone (and tenor) range, the man is a natural bass.

  • With the comment, “If you have it, why not flaunt it “ Geoff singing Way Down should be on your list of songs to analyse soon. Please.

  • Gorgeous performance followed by a classy analysis, thank you! I totally agree with the parallels you drew between the general ‘tribal’ vibe we get from Geoff’s opening in this arrangement and Avi’s ‘Change on the rise’ 🙂
