Amp and Pedal settings, and Why The Manual Should Be Ignored

Brian demonstrates how pedal settings from a manual can sound different through different amps. When you rely on the settings from the manual, the sound can be too bright or not bright enough, depending on how the amp is set up. (This is a video from 2015).

  • So..what you're saying is, i should tweak the pedal..or the amp..until i like the sound, but it also depends ,..sometimes. or not. At least thats ironed out. 😉

  • Anyone ever tried pinnacle deluxe through a solid state amp? I have a blackstar silverline 50W. The clean channel which is kinda fender stylish might work I thought. Do I need the pinnacle? No but as you all know we guitar players have gas lol

  • Seems most reviews on pedals use vox or fender, very clean amps. I have a black star ht 40. Would that lean towards the vox or the fender or non of the above. I wonder because you always hear this pedal is more suited for this or that style amp.

  • Hey Brian thank you for making this video!!! I know it's a few years old but your settings on the Hot Rod Deluxe helped me fine the perfect tone for my Deville!!!

  • Hi Brian! I've had a question since a very long time and no one's ansewered me yet, I think you certainly could. Does using the FX Loop on a VOXAC30C2 "damage" or "worn out" the preamp valves faster? I notice a slight loss of volume when using it, and since the manual doesn't mention anything… Thank you!

  • You should make a pedal that combines the slapback of Sun Records with the cleanish tones up to the slightly overdriven tone of rockabilly songs from the 50s.

  • Well that explains a lot, i thought i was going bonkers. I would practice at home then i would take the same setting on another amp ( vyper 40 watt to evh 50 w 2*12 speaker) what was more noticeable was the distortion sounded clean. I had come to the conclusion to just use you’re best god given tool, the ear.

  • Love what you've done here regarding a constant versus variable. Such a critical methodology to understanding guitar/pedal/amp interaction. Great stuff. I know many of us intuitively know a lot of this or have experienced it, and I hope the more novice players can really take note of these examples, details, concepts and lessons that can be gleaned here. Essential stuff!!!

  • I can't seem to get this pedal to sound good through my silver jubilee. I turn the pedal on and all bass disappears

  • This is so true and is a guitar topic many have yet to understand. It can totally change your world when you discover it. Thank you!!!

  • Which Wampler pedal would you recommend for those handwired Vox amps? Looking for one for my ac15hw1. Thanks for everything you put out for our benefit

  • Moral of the story- if you don't leave your pedal on all the time, pick one with TMB controls so you don't have to screw with your amp. I hear this Wampler guy makes some pretty cool ones.

  • Love how these videos sometimes use someone else's pedals to prove a point but do not necessarily find fault in the pedals themselves. I learned a long time ago that the sample settings in the manual are a great starting point to demonstrate what the pedal can do but not to rely 100% on these settings. They're great to help zero in on a sound, but are only a starting point.
